Will the sub box from an estate still work ok mounted to the bottom of a saloon parcel shelf...with the relevant wiring of course :)

Probably no so well.  For a saloon, I would stick to the 2 shelf speakers

I was under the impression that 99 CDX and Elite had the CCRT700, you should be able to tell which from the MID next to the rev counter. If it has the space for the Phone signal and text message in the bottom right of the screen it should have the CCRT700 and may explain why the screen is in safe mode rather than having been decoded correctly.

You could also have a look at the CDC labels as the CCRT will only work with one specific unit that isn't compatible.

I think if you plugged a non ccrt700 stereo into a ccrt700 mid, you would get no radio info at all (not even SAFE), as they talk different languages.

Agreed more likely to have had a CCR600 in if CDR500 is working ok in its place...
