Fitting ngk iridium plugs to 3.2 v6
« on: 06 December 2008, 21:45:32 »

Hello, does anyone know if fitting NGK iridium ix plugs is a good upgrade for my 3.2 v6 engine ? It was for my previos 3.0 ltr mv6 but then the original 3.0ltr plug spec is for GM twin electrode. and I tried the present 3.2ltr quad spec to my 3.0ltr engine without any improved performance, However the NGK's certainly did give a marginal improvement. :-/

plugs bring me out in a sweat - years ago i put splitfires in my chavalier sri130 and noticed no difference so took them back (30 day money back guarantee).

when i put the old ones back in i managed to cross thread them :-[

had to get local garage to helicoil the thread with head still on, but they F&cked it up and didn't get the swarf out  >:( so next thing you know it's running on 3 cyls and i have to take the head off a grind in a new valve!!!!!!!!

Lol....just fit standard twin electrodes....

1) You will get no noticeable benefit from fancy spark plugs so stick to good quality standard ones!

2) the extra electrodes do jut one thing....extend the service life

3) There is a down side to having more electrodes.....it shields the flame front from the spark!

So for me, twin electrodes all the way and standard Vx ones at that!

Compared to what.....a brand new Vx plug....or a 40K mile Vx plug?

This is the key thing I keep tying to point out to people....its no good comparing snake oil parts against worn standard parts  :y

Lets look at the physics...

The spark will jump between the centre electrode and ONE outer electrode.....it does not spark over all 4!

The resistance of the plug is bugger all when compared to many Kohms of the leads and coil.

The insulation is pretty massive when compared to the leads etc.

So HOW exactly do people see fancy plugs making a difference on standard engine setups!  :y

well the "claim" on denso iridium ones is that you get a more intensive focus'd spark (because it has a very thin electrode so makes it spark better

Again....unable to say the reality behind that......it wont spark better...it might (and its a big might) spark earlier (lectric field concentrated at a samller point) but, the ECU auto adjusts the timing anyway so its not like it can offer a great deal!

IF it was on a tuned and blown engine, I might be able to see how it benefits the ignition process....but on a standard tune volume engine!

I'm with DTM on this I've spent years working on high performance bikes and there is no measureable improvement that you will feel on the road.  If you do/did than then plugs you had before were more than likely totally shot or the wrong type fitting these did nothing more than restore the engine performance.

As stated multi electrodes were developed for increase plug life (or equal standard plugs life of pre-ecu/injected engines) as later ecu injected engines run very much hotter with very precise fuelling making a plugs life very very hard.

You may well get the placebo affect  ;) but that's it.
