burp the coolant?
« on: 09 December 2008, 21:16:56 »

I'm almost ready to get that car back on the road - having replaced the water pump at the weekend I've refilled the coolant bottle with 50/50 Vx antifreeze and water.

As I emptied the system by just pulling off the water pump and dumping the coolant all over the ground, is it likely that air bubbles are in the system after re-filling? It only needed 5L to refill, so I'm assuming old coolant is still in the rad.

How do I get rid of these - should I run the engine up to temp and leave the coolant bottle cap loose to let air work its' way out, or is there another way? I seem to remember another post referring to 'burping' the hoses - how is this done? (I have no kids so am not skilled in the art of burping!)

Cheers

"burping " is done by running the engine to a warm temp with the header tank lid off, doesn't have to be fully hot, have the heater selected to max heat with the blower on full, then grab the LARGE pipe to the left of the engine as you look at it from the front and give it sharp but full squeezes, the level in the header tank will rise every squeeze and drop as you release, this action will cause additional pressure waves of monement throughout the cooler system and, hopefully shift any air. do it for about 5 minutes.. leave for 10 then repeat for 5 is the way I've always done it.
