Where to buy HID?
« on: 09 December 2008, 14:19:21 »

Hi

I've had my nearside headlamp fail on my '98 Elite Estate TD.  It tries to strike but doesn't make it... I assume that this is a bulb problem rather than a ballast problem?  AFAIK the bulb is orignal so I guess if it's done 10 years then that's OK.

I've seen some posts previously that the Philips bulbs (4300K) are the 'OEM' replacements - could anyone recommend the best place to buy these?  If tthese aren't the 'OEM' replacement could someone let me know what is and the best place to buy?

Is it recommended to replace both at the same time?

FWIW my local dealer quoted £117 for the bulb and £82 to fit it.  They wouldn't sell the bulb without fitting - apparently it has to be done in a special 'environment' (the wallet extraction room, no doubt).  Another dealer said they'd sell me the bulb, but if they didn't fit it then there would be no warranty.

Thanks for the help!

Sounds like how mine went, had a pink light briefly, then just flickered.

You can buy a pair on ebay for about £40ish
If you only do 1 side, there will be a colour difference due to bulb age.

Original were 4300K,
most cheap one on ebay are 6000K, which is a whiter / bluer light, which looks better, but doesnt illuminate quite as well.

I really wouldnt go higher than 6000K, if you can find some 5000K, they are about the best.

Not hard to change - just need to shift airbox / battery to get at the torx screws.

Bit late now but try swapping the lamps over to see if its a lamp or ballast fault, my ballast unit failed with the same symptoms..

Hi

Not late at all.... I'll try that too.  But if I've got all the lamps out etc. I'd rather have the bulbs to hand, and I guess I could return the bulbs if they're unopened and swap for a new ballast.....

Thanks again
