bloody alternator again

what can make an alternator suddenly pack up. changed it about 3mths ago. was working fine yesterday, came to start car this morning, battery was flat as a pancake. jumped it, car drives fine, everything on. turn engine off then try and start it again straightaway and battery flat. local parts shop says alternator not charging. any ideas.

Alternator/battery/starter connections? Earth connections?  :-/ :-/

not sure mate, will start checking in the morning. cant understand how all was fine last night but playing up today.

If the car runs ok with everything turned on after jump starting, then I would guess it's the Battery causing the problem and not the Alternator. Batteries can die very quickly this time of year. Did you check the voltage accros the main battery terminals while the engine was running? :-?

Measure the battery voltage with the engine revving...

The fact the car can be jump started and continus to run sudgests the alternator is ok but....check as per above to confirm.

battery not holding charge (breaked) was thinking as much earlier but bottled it. Easy when the experts have been in. He he.  ;D

Might not be as I had this problem early this year. Called the RAC out and they suspected the alternator, Made a patch lead up that went from the top of the plenum (for a good earth) then to the negative terminal on the battery. Left the car running for about an hour the car was fine after that. Went to VX an ordered two new earth cables, one that went to the body and the other that went by the air con pump (I think) job done car been fine ever since. The earthing cables were very hard and shot.
Just check the earthing straps and see what they are like.

P.s I did not have the battery light come on either.
