Facelift MV6 Running Issues
« on: 28 December 2008, 14:08:56 »

Ok, picked up a facelift 3.2 ex cop MV6 yesterday...

Starts and just about runs but then dies and VERY lumpy...

Had a fiddle checking for air leaks especially IACV and have got it to a point where it stays running but lumpy and a bit loud, got a strong feeling its an air leak quite possibly something to do with plenum although could of course be dispack failure...

No idea how the symptoms started but its a nice car and needs sorting :) Doesnt seem to have been hacked about like some ex cop cars, nice CCR2006 stereo in it etc...

Whats the best place to start, any ideas?

Gonna take the plenum off and the breather box off tomorrow to see if there is anything obvious...so basically usual suspects...will have a double check on the oil in plugs while I'm at it but 'feels' more like air leak...

Not sure if related (think it is though) but brake pedal feels very heavy, not much give on it...gotta feeling I have seen similar airleak problems on another post where the heavy brake pedal was due to the air leak affecting the brake servo?? But cant remember which pipe was likely culprit for air leak...

heavy pedal means air in the servo..mine also does it if stays for few days..after few pumps it turns to normal.. I have seen cases where the plastic tube in front of the servo is broken or fractured (dual one)
I think needs checking..

IACV, you mean Idle Air Control Valve? 3.2 don't have them  ;)

Check the vacuum servo pipe that comes out of the plenum on the right, goes through a right angle and then routes around the back to the servo. Mine was rubbing against the Aircon pipe near the bulkhead and had worn through.

Ok now I'm confused because yes the car is a 3.0 MV6 IACV and all and was sold as such, however on the back of the car it clearly states 3.2...I guess some wishful person at some point (or the police lol) stuck the 3.2 on lol

Anyone got an MV6 boot sticker the little silver one? lol

Ok I will have a look at the servo pipe tomorrow and see if there is anything wrong with it...

Ok had the plenum off found 2 of the passengers side plenum o rings were out of their hole and crimped by the plenum...the 3rd passengers side o ring was missing altogether...also a split in one side of the large breather pipe on the underside just behind the clip holding it to the plenum...and a small split on the breather bit running off the brake servo pipe...so sorted that...

Pulled driver side plugs...oil in the front 2 wells...so cam cover gaskets need sorting and breather system needs cleaning...cleared out the oil anyway...

Put it all back together and car starts and runs but is a bit lumpy (probably to be expected from the oil being in the wells)

But the EML is still showing the same codes as before, its going on and off from time to time so suspect its still live...

Codes are 73 and 74!! MAF voltage low AND high...how can that be?? Checked the wiring to the MAF and that the plugs in ok and seems fine...

Any thoughts?  ;D

Well to make sure I have swapped over the MAF with another and its still the same...car starts first time now, idles nicely at 500rpm without variation and accelerates without hesitation...its all just rather lumpy doing so...

Checked under the bonnet and revved it up and there is a distinctive schlooop sound of air being taken in somewhere on initial revving...sounds drivers side plenum area so wondering if I havent reseated the plenum 100%...either that or the EGR needs tighening up to the plenum (or the gasket isnt sitting right)

lol a schloop sound is familiar to a running horribly 2.5 sat in my garage chris!

i'd have said maybe the timings a tooth out, either that or your starting to get oil in a plug well again so it's missing

Nice idea fife :) Having the cam cover gaskets sorted tomorrow so we will see whether the schloop is still there after :) Started the car today and the EML is now off and car is good apart from slightly lumpy running, I'm guessing that the leads being work a bit so again we will see if its nice and smooth after the cam covers are sorted as its having new plugs and leads on as well as a replacement dispack just for luck to be sure :)
