Yesterday, I drove to Cambridge to pick up some friends from the station. The magnificent sat-nav got me to within 200m of the station then took me all the way out of town onto the west-bound A14, where the engine cut out completely while travelling at about 40mph. Fortunately, after I coasted to a stop, I was able to restart, first time. This was all accompanied by the (not unusual) smell of overheated oil.
Having restarted, we headed back to the centre of town, and the engine cut out again, only we were going a bit slower this time. It restarted on the second or third attempt.
After this, I turned the sat-nav off, and relied on my wife's map reading skills, and we got to the station 15 minutes late. After lunch, we drove the 50 miles home without any problem, and with no further unpleasant odours.
So, is there something wrong with the car, or something wrong with Cambridge? I'm pretty sure the sulky sat-nav had nothing to do with the engine problem
