Hi y'all

I've noticed that my elite 2.2dti Diesel (2003 with 53k Miles) is returning about 30 mpg and is becoming a sod to start on these cold mornings.  My initial reaction is to change the glo-plugs but as I dont know a great deal about these things I though I would come here first.

Also I am pretty sure that I used to get 36 mpg on avegage,  What do you guys think ?

I average about 44mpg combined in my car and also had the very same figures on my last car which was a facelift Elite.

The injector seals are prone to failing on these engines and as far as I know this can cause poor starting.  The seals and injectors have already been done in my car as I was also having poor MPG issues.

The injector seals. Found a receipt in my service history saying mine had been done before I bought the car and was told by Opel Ireland that it was a common problem with the 2.2Dti. I'm no mechanic though, just going on what they told me!

I'm not sure I know what these are, would they explain the poor mpg too ?

If you check the fuel filter you can tell if the injector seals are leaking. If there ok, the filter will look normal. If they have gone, the filter will have black engine oil in the bottom (thats what ive been told anyway im sure). And yes, this will also make the car harder to start when cold. If these seals are gone, you need to remove the rocker cover, and camshaft. Its not that bad a job to do really.

I would also check the leakoff pipes, as there prone to cracking and leaking diesel/ letting air into the system, which will result in longer cranking to refill the injectors and pump with diesel. Easy and cheap to change if needed.

Hmmmm, Well the seals were ok, no signs of leaking diesel.   Just changed the glow plugs as two of them were a little bit sooty so 4 x NGK's later.

Alas, I am still getting 30 mpg.  I just think this is very low.

Any Idea's guys ?

dont know to much about the 2.2 but that does sound low to me, thig is these motors have a ridiculously long service interval dont they?
i would start with a complete service methinks oil and filter air filter fuel filter etc, then see how its doing on fuel, goes without saying oif course that they will use more fuel in colder temperatures   but i wouldnt have thought more than 2 or 3 mpg?

It does seem a bit on the low side.
My 2.5TD Estate is returning 33mpg constantly.

Yes its totally flat on power, especially at low revs, its been completely serviced, new everything and now new glowplugs. I am at a loss, my mechanic is out of idea's too!

Such a pity as the car was great, now its just a sod to start, averageing 29-30 Mpg and flat as a pancake.

I am seriously open to idea's

Your symptoms sound exactly the same as what I had with mine. My troubleshooting went from the MAF sensor to the EGR system until I finally fixed it with new injectors. So if you have confirmed that the injectors are fine then I would start looking at the others.
