2.5 TD better engine running when tank near empty
« on: 27 December 2008, 08:19:46 »

Hello,

How come my 2.5 TD works much better (more power, less noise) when the tank is near-empty ?
At first I thought this was an impression, but no, it does this every time the gauge approaches the red zone.
I'm sure there's an explanation.

with diesel weighing around 10pounds a gallon, a full tank would be pretty heavy!! would think its just the less weight is the difference you can feel?

Probably not, since the feeling is the same with passengers aboard !

Thanks.

I would have thought it was something to do with the fuel system.  I would start with the fuel filter and move on to the fuel pump.

That's usually my motto too. But there's a real problem here I suspect, you can't even imagine the difference. When the tank nears its emptiness (!) it really is another car. The car I used to know in fact. Trouble is, problems like this appear gradually and you don't notice until one parameter changes and reveals it.
Anyway, thanks for your replies.

Hi,

Mi nes the opposite, runs much better when its got a good tankful. Would try running some injector cleaner throught it and a filter change, difficult to tell unless you can feel the difference im afraid :-/

Cheers,
Iain

this seams  a strange one as i cant think of anything that would change apart from the weight in the tank unless the electric pump is a bit weak and with less fuel works harder which pushes the fuel at what it should be at  all the time.so the car isnt faster just working as it should

Should I clean the pump then ? The filter is new, and before changing it the engine stalled regularly.

Disconnect the battery...and don't smoke on the job.  Diesel is nowhere near as inflammable as petrol.
