It's normal to feel some play at the steering wheel with the engine stopped. Once running, check there is no "lost motion" between steering wheel and track rod while gently rocking the steering wheel.

thanks kev, them you hold steering wheel at 9oclock and 3oclock there is alot of movement as if there is something worn maybe where the tilt steering part is are there any bushes there under the steering wheel that would cause play

Do you mean lateral movement of the steering wheel, or play in the rotation?

I would imagine there's a poly bush or two that support the column which could wear and cause lateral play. Not had the column apart, I'm afraid. :-/

both my omegas have had play/rocking in the column, never seemed to get any worse, and as Kevin says, with engine off play between steering wheel and road wheels, this slack is taken up when engine on althoug there is an adjustment on the steering box, but thats a last report really.

If your having trouble keeping the car in a straight line, first place to look is wishbone bushes on the front and donut bushes as the back. Then steering idler/track rod ends. Hth

Edit, never had the colum apart but have seen talk one here re a poly bush or similar. Worth a search...
