Cam covers for V6 2.5 auto CDX saloon '99 facelift
« on: 16 January 2009, 00:29:03 »

I have had a quick search and I see that you can replace the plastic cam covers with steel ones. My plastic ones seem to leak as I near the service.

When I bought it with around 73 k on the clock the cam belt had just been done all was well. For the 80k service the leak started shortly before and when the breathers were cleaned out all was well.

It is now due the 90k service and I have checked the breathers which are ok but the cam cover (dvrs side) is leaking again.

Can anyone tell me exactly what model cavs & omega's I can rob the steel covers from (ebay or breakers etc) so I can get a better seal?

  Hi Tuckshop,
Firstly you need to adjust you avatar, it's to big and as for the camcovers it's best to keep to the Omega ones as the steel ones can cause other problems if the breathers get blocked such as crank seals blowing and also the oil filler is on the wrong side :y.

Check covers for warping(rarely happens) and make sure you only use genuine gaskets as pattern parts are crap and false economy, also use black sealant as in the how to in the maintenance section :y

mite be worth re torqueing the bolts first, 8nm and not a penny more, the seals get old, hard and shrink a little, some of mine where loose.

If still leaking then genuine only gaskits and o rings, black goo round the half moon cam cut outs and follow the guide in maintenance section.
Metal/plastic covers alone are not the issue. Its the seals that do the job. But if your determind to fit them its the old shape vectra you want. Hth

Firstly, I've had to remove your avatar due to its size, sorry.

Metal cam covers are not the answer - it shifts the problem to a different part of the engine, normally one of the crank seals.  I know what I'd rather replace!

There are 3 common reasons for Omega v6 camcovers failing:
  • Blocked breathers
  • Crap pattern gaskets
  • Some numpty doing them up to tight (8Nm)

Oh, and one mythical rumour spread by mechanics and garages as an excuse for their poor workmanship
  • Warped covers

I seem to have a problem with my avatar - cannot seem to make it smaller  :(

I think when the weather improves I shall have to impose on someone's hospitality and go visit for a lesson on how to fit these cam seals... :-[

guide in maintenance mate. :-)

Only use genuine seals/o rings. Vx also do the black goo, or halfords for the loctite equivalent.
