3.0 MV6 Water Leak Update

Right, here we go.

I ordered a number of new seals which I collected from VX this morning so decided to try and find this waterleak before it does any serious damage.

Ive stripped her down (which out of interest took approx 20 minutes as stated) and got down to the oil cooler, however Im not sure if this is where the leak is coming from. Due to this I decided to take a few photos and leave her in pieces for the night to rebuild tom.

Please see the photos below:




Can anyone confirm that this is the cause of my problem. I have had a good look round and cannot see anywere else where it could be leaking from. She currently has the blue antifreeze in her. Any advice would be welcome.

Sorry, I think it is leaking from the rear union bolt on the rear of the oil cooler.

looks like its from the oil cooler union? bolt as you say andy, think you'll be wantin one of the union bolt seals!
think they're the washer with a rubber ring in the middle too!

actually... thinking about it you should be getting an oil leak if anything if it's the union bolt....
are you sure it's not coming  up one of the torx bolts? or up and over the edges of the oil cooler top?

No Im not sure. I Dont know how the oil cooler works as Ive never taken one appart however if thats a waterpipe then looking at it I would guess that its leaking, however if its an oil pipe it cant be that.

I didnt think that it could be water coming up over the oil cooler as the engine tilts back slightly if im correct so it would flow straight down the back of the engine or is it possible its the coolant bridge and its just dripping onto the oil cooler  :( :-/

i think from memory that the middle rubber pipe on the heater bridge was a bit shit on my old 2.5 (mine looked like it'd had a piece of pipe with the actual pipe slid over that from a previous leak on my black 2.5) it might be worth you taking the heater bridge off and looking at the condition of the black pipe where it goes onto it- so if you check that first....

the oil cooler is basically a radiator that fits into a slot in the bottom end and the engine coolant runs along the sides of that to transfer the heat

Ok, well I did get the heater bridge seals today anyway so thats no loss, but Im guessing that the oil cooler pipe would need new seals or do you think I could clean them up and possibly use a little sealant to seal it for the time being. Then purchase new seals for next time I strip her??

the oil cooler seals should just be the copper ones like on the gearbox oil cooler mounted on the side of the rad... he says

if it's the copper ones then just heat them up on the hob and let them cool down to aneal them ready for use abuse   :D

oh yeah andy, i only just noticed your 3.0 is an auto... you big girl :P get a manual-you can get sideways in the wet dropping the clutch like a madman into second :D

Thats good then I should be able to remove those as well tomorrow. I will start by removing the bridge and checking the hoses as that will give me better access to the oil cooler.

Yes it is an auto and so is the 2.0 but you dont have to have a manual to go sideways, just kick tc off and drop it in sports and drop the hammer (away you go  :D )

lol i know what you mean but sports mode is a bit scetchy- i found it hard in the 2.0 to know when it was going to go sideways, it's easy in the manual as you just plonk it and can see as you start going sideways to see out of a side window :P

the 3.0 made me poo myself before it decided to try eating its self lol, i went round canklow roundabout with macdonalds on it in first and this was before i got the multiram sorted so was a bit underpowered... and it went very very sideways lol - i came off the roundabout to go back towards halfords and i was looking at the signs out of the front window that are in the middle just after you've come off the roundabout (i didnt poo myself much did i hmm)

oh yeah, when i said about dropping the clutch into second like a hooligan... i meant doing it on a straight road after gritters had been out :P and that was with tc on lmao!

lol, you do know they put mobile speed cameras on that road all the time lol

Manuals will always pick up quicker as you can drop a gear at will but hey Im used to the auto now and its much better on all the long journeys we do as I hate clutching in traffic jams. My 407 used to be a pain in the butt due to it having a really stiff clutch being new. i hated it in traffic as I would get cramp  :D ;D

I have fond memories of power slididing round that one.

I managed to powerslide the car sideways all the way round it a very long time ago.  I had a Sylvia turbo at the time, was fun.  I certainly wouldnt try it there these days as the plod are often sat in McD's

I prefer the roundabout below the police station, I came onto that in my Ford Orion Turbo and hit one of the bumps on the roundabout and ended up sideways on there, I went all the way round to head towards B&Q and then snapped it back to see a police car behind me. They pulled up at the side of me at the next island and clapped  :D ;D :D
