51plate 2.2 Petrol Engine Limited to 4500 RPM
« on: 05 January 2009, 13:16:44 »

Hi All,

This is my first post having just joined so here goes and i hope someone can help me out. I have checked the current list and can see one of a similar nature but this was for the diiferent engine - apologies if this has already been covered

I currently have two problems with my car (51plate 2.2 Petrol CDX Est AUTO- latest facelift). :o

Firstly, I have had several instances of the orange/amber engine management light appearing, after running the car gently for 4-5 days the light will eventually go out. But if i accelereate hard or at full throttle, the light will no doubt re-appear, as this is when it tends to come on - following a drive where i have had to push the throttle fully open.

I have also noticed that the car appears to now be limited to exactly 4500rpm (wether the management light is lit or not). As i have an autobox this means i have to drive very cautiously, or else it will just reach 4500rpm and will not change until i lift off, wait for the gear change and then reapply the gas. I suspect a sensor failure which is now acting as a restrictor. any suggestions?

p.s. I am planning to clean out the throttle body and intake as i don't know if this will help or not, but i will await for response before carrying out any actions. :y

....................

Secondly an unrelated auto box issue..

When ever i am cruising along at about 60 -70 mph, and i reach a slight incline, the autobox seems to change down in order to maintain my speed (does this wether on cruise control or not, but more apparant when on cruise control). Is this a common thing with the autobox??  Not sure myself as this is the first auto box car i have purchased. basically it seems to change down under circumstances that i would not expect it too, or where the engine should have enough power to maintain my speed without changing down.  again any suggestions for this?? :-/

Hope you can help out  thanks....  p.s. I don't know too much about this car or what any of the parts look like or where they can be found, so any detailed responses will be greatly appreciated..

Thanks in advance Barry

You need to do the pedal test (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1189022687) and list your codes sounds like a sensor!

Hope this helps

Sadly the pedal test does not work on the 2.2

What is needed is the fault codes reading from the ECU, where abouts in the UK are you?

Sound like cam sensor problems.

Thanks ...

Any idea on the price & best place to buy a cam sensor?? Also where is this located? thanks

Is it best to get the codes read first (just that i know this will cost min £50) or do i change the sensor and hope this will cure?? any thoughts?

You need to get the codes read first.

If it is the cam sensor, only replace it with a genuine Vx one.

might be worth asking a local independent garage if they have a snap on code reader, or similar, which should have no problem with basic engine codes and should be drastically cheaper than vx who, as a rule, seem to struggle to use tech2 at best and at worst incorrectly diagnose a new ecu, or some other massively expensive part.

Or take a treck over to see Mr dtm who has a tech2, knows how to use it, and knows the car inside out.
Bit far with a sick mig though, perhaps?

I wonder if the gear box will sort itself out when the engine fault is fixed, if the ecu is working to the new rev limit?

Thanks for the responses to date, I will contact my local Halfords , hopefully they can read the codes without too much trouble and take it from there.

Right an update for you,

I have changed the Cam Sensor (purchased an original )and also cleaned all of the throttlebody and breather pipes (as i knew the small breather that goes to the throttle body was blocked). I have also used a bottle of Cataclean, to ensure everything is in tip top condition.

The fault is now resolved, the engine is responsive again and will happy rev over the 4500rpm to which is was limited to before.

You were right is was the cam sensor at fault.

next problem

When ever i am cruising along at about 60 -70 mph - betwenn 2500 -3000rpm, and i reach a slight incline, the autobox seems to change down to 3rd in order to maintain my speed is this a common thing with the autobox??  Basically it seems to change down under circumstances that i would not expect it too, or where the engine should have enough power to maintain my speed without changing down.  again any suggestions for this??

I'm thinking of changing the Gbox Oil & filter, as the car has done 100k now. any suggestions??

Thanks in advance Barry

Never any harm in changing the gearbox oil and filters at that mileage, but doubt it will fix your 'problem'.  See if any other 2.2 auto owners comment on whether thats normal

I think that your gearbox is behaving normally.

My 2004 2.2 auto estate does exactly the same on cruise, it was especially noticeble on a recent journey through France. On the Autoroutes it would suddenly change down on a relatively gentle slope, must be something to do with a load sensor.

I changed the oil and filter on mine last year at 90,000 miles so it would not hurt to change yours, especially for peace of mind.

The oil was not that discoloured (motorway driven most of it's life) but there was a fair amount of grey sludge on the magnet.

GM's latest gearbox ecu update addresses this problem of hunting for gears - most notable when towing something heavy. Mine behaved as per your box and having the ecu upgraded made the whole gearbox sweeter and the drive much better.
BUT it can only be done via Tech2 - a real one  not a copy

My saloon behaves similiarly although usually only changing down when there is more than just a slight incline (gearbox update has been done). Bear in mind that the estate is a heavy car and you have a small engine so i think this is normal
