Omega Diffs
« on: 19 January 2009, 10:37:16 »

I am trying to find out what diffs are fitted in Omegas with a view to getting a much higher rated LSD equivalent. It seems that the Holden versions had a BTR (borg warner) 78 series and the US Catera had a Dana model 80 diff which is described in a few places as basically a borg warner but made in america. If the UK ones have a borg warner 78 series then a quaife QDH3M or QDH4M should be a direct replacement. Anyone got any inside information as to who made the Omega diffs and what they are? Mr Google seems to have a lot of contradictory information.

you'd be better just trying to find somebody breaking an ex police mv6 (mv6 suspension, hid headlights, lsd differential)

already got both a standard and an LSD but I doubt either is even close to being strong enough for twin turbo V8 lump, hence trying to identify the true model of the diff center units to try and find an aftermarket unit to replace it with. Come on folks, someone must know where GM got em from!

sadly the V8 versions of the Omega never made it out here in the UK, i believe there are some V8 Holdens Commadors out there would be best suited.

However that said, a member here did put an engine from a Lotus Cartlon in an Omega (3.6 Twin Turbo) but he used the diff from the Lotus i think.

The Diff should take the power of a monster V8, its the R28 gearbox which will be shredded, and the R28 was the best manual box the Omega got!

As said earlier, the Lotus Carlton diff bolted straight in to the Omega, this is a holden v8 differential, but the model escapes me at the moment :-[ however the swedish guys(stephan) have L.C.engines regularly putting out over 700bhp and the L.C. diff takes it no problem down the drag strip regularly where they run under10sec passes, so would think it would be quite happy with you engine setup if your ony intending using it for road use, and not laying number elevens everywhere?? :y

Luckily I'm using a tremec T5 gearbox. Now the LC diff is an interesting idea. When you say it "fits" the omega do you mean the diff fits in the omega housing or the entire LC diff housing fits in an omega rear sub frame? All in all this sounds like the emergence of a plan!

That R28 gearbox dont knock it! ive seen an LS1 miggy with a Carlton diff and r28 box i believe the chap was telling me it was at a Cruise in Cheltenham that i attended before the police demanded that i leave!

i always assumed that the LC diff is the same fitment as the miggys as the mig and carlton share quite alot of drivetrain bits

not quite, but the L.C REAR subframe bolts into the Omega complete with dff and driveshafts which are thicker than the std ones,to take the power, also the rear discs are huge and vented :y
click on the links on me sig and you can see the beast it was done to although sadly its only outside shots and not the technical underpinnings, was to interested in getting t finished and driveqable to take anymore shots of something i didnt know was going to work, !!!

you would be surprised just how many are being broken, if it helps the rear subframe is just an uprated GSI 24V carlton one, the L.C. diff and driveshafts brakes discs etc bolt on to it
