Asking for Help Again - Engine failing in Idle
« on: 07 January 2009, 00:13:15 »

Hello Folks.
First of all thanks for the last help. Found spark plugs with oil, using the GUIDES here I was able to change the cam gasket (blocked breather pipe), change spark plug, clean the throttle body, After 3 hours service done and for me was a pleasure.
Car was running perfect until start failing again.
Now only fails with the engine in IDLE and HOT and. No failure lights, feels the car shaking and the rpm indicator goes down and come back.
Well I just can see:
- Coil pack fail (could be in short after the oil in the spark plug) :-/
- Air leaking ??? :-/ :-
- ???

Help from the experts here.

Again thanks for the GUIDES that save me some and gave a lot of pleasure to make the maintenance by myself.
CAR: 2002 - 2.2 = 65000m - CD - AUTO
Thanks a lot

probably the rubber boots have split on the coil pac, due to the oil, seem to remember a mention that the rubbers are available seperately to the coil pac, which comes with them, so you need to remove the coil pac and examine, imho.

if the coil pack is damaged/cracked as well, just get the coil pac, obviously. ;)

Thanks for reply.

Which ones ? There is a pack with 2 screws on the top of the spark plugs.

Thinking about change the fuel filter.
The strange is no fails start running the car (actually very fine, fast acceleration - after the cleaning) .  When I stop the car start fails. :-[

Rubbers........Could be.
I remember 2 days before find the oil (a lot) had the same problem.
And after change the gasket was fine for 2 weeks.

Does the coil pack can be easily damaged ?

not easily, imho. but the oil and heat will cook the plastic and rubber if left long enough, and then allow the spark to escape.

I think this is a 2L breather/ICV problem.

Make sure you follow the guide in detail. Especially the cleaning of the small bore nozzle just under the throttle body.  If the hoses are like putty then replace them - only a few quid.   Give the ICV a good clean and replace both the ICV and TB gaskets - again only pennies.

Re: Asking for Help Again - Now failing on M4 today
« Reply #9 on: 11 January 2009, 23:22:59 »

Hello All.
Thanks for all help here.

Not too much time to work on it. Shame on me.
My problem changed now, before just failing in idle.
Today I got the M25 towards London.  Everything was fine until get the entrance for M4. Car started fail. Stopped on the shoulder ,open hood and went to the coil pack. Nothing, dry.
Just got my way back home to Chertsey.
Car failing JUST after 2500 RPM. Can't go after 60 mph.  When I did some pressure and got more RPM the engine light came on. Ask a friend to take a look in the code for me.   :-/ :'(
Well. I will check:
- Fuel Filter
- Clean again throttle body
- Coil Pack with problem (Was full of oil on the plugs when I got the first problem.

- Looks the problem start when the car get hot.

Any more Ideas ???
Cheers

Probably best to check those 3 first mate, before spending huge amounts of money

While you have the throttle body off, clean the Idle Control Valve too and all breather pipes

if it is the spark breaking down under load that is causing the problem, the longer you leave it, the more damage will be done. Imho.

May need new plugs as well now, the insulator may well be scored/damaged, leaving black tracks/lines. Check the plugs as well when you check the coil pac.

their is a way to test the spark of your leads, well to test they are sparking.

firstly it needs to be darkish to see the spark.

you need to get access to the leads  remove one lead turn the engine on and hold it aganist the enigne block (from what i racall) it should give a decent spark. turn the engine off and then move on to the next lead and repeat the process.

if your not happy doing this then you can check the resistance and continunity of the leads with a fluke. i cant remember from the top of my head what the reading should be.

i am sure someone will know on here.

the other one if the rubber ends are stained at the bottom from oil i would recommend replacing them. i replaced mine with bosoch ones and they have been ok.

good luck and i hope this helps.
