Hiya all,
   I am looking at replacing my crank sensor today. I just dont know where it is or how to go about it. I have a 2ltr 16v Omega. Any help at all would be much appreceated.

On the V6 this link would help Duncan, but I notice you have a straight 4 pot so not so sure it will be in the same place! :-/ :-/

Someone else will no doubt advise, but it is still worth looking around the oil filter area.

Did the crank sensor on my 2.0 couple of weeks ago.

You need to remove the fan belt. Then undo the A/C compressor and move it out of the way.
Remove the bracket that the compressor is mounted on. Its held on by 4 bolts
1. behind the compressor,
2. near the exhaust manifold,
3.one through the engine bracket
4. Cant remember

The crank sensor is located between the Pas pump ans the A/c compressor right on the block.

            Thanks for that you two. I think that on the 4 pot its not located near the oil filter but on the right hand side of the block as you look at it. Ta anyway.
            Omega mans info looks more promising though, Thanks. Have been out to do the job and found I need a star socket, DOHHH. Off to Halfords now, May have to start this in the a.m.
             Omega man, the reason i am attempting this is because my miggie will not start. I get a clacking from a relay when I turn the ignition on. Sometimes I get a reading of 5000 on the rev counter when the ignition is on to (but engine not running?). Sometimes I get a reading of 1000 on the rev counter too, also without the engine running.
           Is this the problem you had, that made you change your crank sensor?? Turns over fine, just will not fire up.

You do realise that the "star socket" is in fact officially a Torx socket and they are available in Halfords as you say.

On the brighter side, British Gas turned up today and repaired my boiler, COOL. So at least I will be clean before I start getting oily.LOL.

Did't get any mad readings on the rev counter but that could just be a different symptom of the crank sensor.

I had that clicking from the relay before. The car wouldn't even crank so I thought it was the starter which was fine. Turned out to be a bad earth connection on the block.

So while your doing the crank sensor take off the earth connection and give it a good clean with wd-40. There's two connections one is next to the PAS pump and the other is on the body under the battery
just follow the heavy wire from the negative terminal to fin it easily

   Hi Omega man,
           I have this very morning checked it out for an earth problem. Found the ones you mention plus a large multiple earth connection point just below the battery. (about seven different earths there). Checked them all, cleaned them all. Tried to start and.......same. Turns over dandy, but wont fire up. Sometimes pink relay(whats that do?) chatters. Sometimes rev counter shows 5000 revs. Bugger.
           Gonna have to change the crank sensor I think. Unless anyone has any other suggestions

Hi Boo

Just checked, the pink relay is definetly for the injectors.
I dont know what the noise was however.
As soon as i got my car running it stoped right away and hasn't done anything since so it may just be a rusult of the engine not firing and not a big issue.

The crank sensor keeps track of the location of the crankshaft so it could easily result in the readings on your rev counter if its knackered. I didn't get that, I changed mine as it showed up paperliping it.

Hiya,
      Well after many uncomfortable and freezing cold hours later I have suceeded in getting my Carnk sensor out. What a bugger of a job.
      Thanks to Omega man for telling the locations of three of the four bolts i needed to get at.  
     BTW the fourth bolt oonly becomes visible when you remove bottom pump (air con I think-or is it pas) The bolt is hidden by it.
      The cable to the Crank sensor Has a lot of heat damage, insulation burnt through, bare wires exposed, would have been giving a short I am sure. Next step is to order a replacement and get it fitted.
      I was toying with the idea of just repairing the cable and reinsulating it with heat proof tape, but I dont want to be doing all that lot again in a month or so.
      Wish I had taken a few piccs as i went along because I do seem to have removed an awful lot of bolts in the process. And my memory aint what it used to be. LOL.
      I will let you know when i have fitted the replacement.

Good job!

Crank sensor definatly breaked then. If it was heat damaged make sure when you are fitting the new one route the wire further from the exhaust so you wont be doing it again.

Let us know how it goes, should just fire up then.

  It didnt work. New crank sensor in. Reassembled evrything spot on. Turn the key,,,,,same old thing cranks fine but wont fire. Bugger.
 OK, Cam sensor??
 Gotta do something. Any clues as to how to go about this one anybody.
 When i switch ignition on, i get 5000 revs showing without the engine running. When i crank it over i get about 1000 revs showing. when i rest the key, i get a chattering fuel relay under the bonnet untill i switch off.  Help me please,
