I notice from other postings people seem to change the water pump when renewing the cambelts. Is this done as a precaution ?. My 2001 78000mile 2.5 V6 is due for a cambelt change and I get the impression I should get the water pump done at the same time as, as far as I know, it's still on the original.

Yes - it's recommended that the water pump be changed at the same time to avoid any problems with leakage, the pump seizing, etc. As it's only 20 odd quid and you're in an ideal position to change it when you're doing the cambelt (i.e. aux belt is off, and the pump is exposed) then it's well worth doing.

yes it is just a precaution as u dont want to be taking the cam belt back off if the water pump fails.i did this when i did mine the pump was only 15 quid

But aoliver wouldn't need to take his cam belt off to change his water pump due to him having a full compliment of cylinders!

But getting that bloody aux belt off is a pain in the backside - Marks DTM makes it look easy in the DVD - I nearly cut a trough in the palm of my hand trying to 'whack the tensioner over' to release the belt!

You need a longer 15mm spanner/socket & T-bar or a rag wrapped around your spanner.

its usually said that you do the water pump every other cambelt, so every 80k, which is what you're approaching

Ah, experience has taught me the best way to do tensioners - get the 15mm spanner, ring on the tensioner nut, then get another spanner, loop the ring around the open end of the 15mm, there's a certain way that they'll lock together. Then marvel at your own physics lesson in action, cos the tensioner will move easily...

Easier still and easier on the hands is a breaker bar with a 15mm socket on the end
As for the water pump like stated above every other Cambelt Change, but I personally would change it every Cambelt Change as it is only £30 odd quid.

I have a nice piece of scaffold pole (but not as wide) that slots nicely over pretty much any tool to yank stiff bolts loose...works great on wheel nuts too...pretty much same thing as the breaker bar, just cheaper!
