When the gear box boils!
« on: 29 January 2009, 10:16:13 »

This may be useful to someone. When my Omega 2.5 auto gearbox threw a wobbly and failed to engage in top gear (and did offer a warning which I duly ignored), it overheated, the oil boiled out of the breather over the exhaust and tried to set the car on fire on the M25. I was alerted by the thick fog in the rear view mirror. I stopped, hopped out, ran round to the verge and looked underneath to see flames and oil everywhere. For a millisecond my brain told me to blow it out!. Anyway I assumed I shouldn't drive it on was recovered by the AA.

At home I was a bit surprised that the drive still engaged. My brother in law then said he thought that many 'recon' gearboxes have only had the internal filter and oil replaced. So we did that insitu on a borrowed garage ramp. Hey presto, smooth as ever and no further problems in the following 60,000 miles until I sold the car. This is despite regular towing of my sailing dinghy.

That happened to me years ago with my 2.2 Carlton on the M6 while towing our tiny caravan. Smoke everywhere!! Let it cool & it seemed OK. Got to our camp site, topped up the gearbox with the fill tube that we used to get & all was well .....
