3.0 v6 Restarting After Fuel Run Out
« on: 07 February 2009, 18:26:10 »

Any ideas on this...

Car starts first time every time normally...

run out of fuel a few times recently as the guage isnt very accurate and it rarely has more than a fiver put in it...

But after running out of fuel its failing to start once a can of fuel is put in it...tries to splutter into life a little but mostly just turning over without firing at all...

Any thoughts on what I might be causing the really bad starting after fuel starvation...fuels defo getting to the rail as fiddled wiht the air release valve to make sure this time...but generally needs towing and jump starting to get it to go again...after its started its right back to first time every time starting...

Could it be tired pump, or slightly on its way out crank shaft sensor??

EML light has been on since I got the car because of a code 61 if that might in any way effect the answer...

It could be something as simple as some crap from the bottom of the tank being drawn up into the system, has the pump become more noisy when running, i`d check filters too.   :y

Hey my smillies have stopped working???

Was thinking fuel filter was worth looking at/changing as it seems to have got progressively harder to start with each time it runs out...

But then if it was blocked fuel filter etc surely it would be hard to start all the rest of the time too?? No noticable fuel pump noises

Smilies still seem to be working!  :y

In theory yes, but debris in the system can be unpredictable, sometimes all it takes is chucking £20 in the tank and letting things `flush through`. Once had a similar prob on me old GSI.

Have seen on some posts that a crank shaft sensor sometimes struggles if its on its way out only when the engine is very low on fuel...will change fuel filter anyway as I have a brandnew one here that I got with another v6 Omega :)

Even I know a "fiver" in the tank of a 3.0 will probably get me to the bottom of my drive and back, are times that hard that you canonly manage to put a fiver in?

you need to put at least 20 in from empty to move the guage out of the red. you aint doing the car any favours by running it dry every time.

I find the 2.5 the best on fuel economy out the whole range, better than the 2.0 as thats too small for such a big car, and the 3.0 is too thirsty to justify 30bhp more than the 2.5

 ;)

I get an average 26mpg+ from the 3.0 not much worse than the 2.5 I had before and the 40bhp extra aside, the extra 40Nm torque the engine has makes a huge difference when towing another Omega behind you...makes it effortless most of the time  :y

The fuel guage isnt great as per most Omegas and says I'm empty with £10 of fuel in...also (and I'm suspecting its cos I have a 3.0 lump in a 2.5 car) the miles to go is inaccurate getting to 0 waaaaay before its out of fuel...

The most reliable reading seems to be the amount of fuel used reading...if I stick £5 in it will quite happily go till its used a little over a gallon according to the reading so I generally rely on that...simply forgot today and didnt realised we had travelled as far on the £5 as we had...

Obviously the solution is to make sure there is enough fuel in the car...too little in is making the fuel pump work harder than it needs to no doubt...but I'm wondering if its failure to restart after running out is a sign of something on its way out?? Normally after running out of fuel I would expect the car to at least threaten to start once filled with a can...and certainly to restart after no more than 10 seconds or so...and when it does start it really splutters into life!!

by repeatadly running out your straining the fuel pump at a guess and also you'll keep getting air in the injectors/fuel rail which means that you'll have to pump fuel up the fuel line, push the air into the cylinders than wait a min or so and then fuel will start getting pumped through..

Had a similiar problem with my v6 after getting it back from my neighbour after they ran out of fuel. They had  the aa out who told them that the fuel pump had gone, but I traced it to the pump getting no power. having checked the fuel pump relay was supplying power I found there was no supply to the fuse although the haynes manual shows its next inline so as a last resort I linked a live supply from another fuse just to start and move it. It started first time when i removed the link it continued running and I've never had a problem since. I don't know if there is a pressure switch somewhere which cuts the power if the pump runs dry but talking to a local mechanic hes had similiar problem when changing fuel filters.

I would guess, as well as the fuel filter being partially blocked, you're getting air in.  Constantly running out is bad for the cats.  Fill the tinker up when the fuel light starts flashing (around 15m to go in a 3.0) at latest, tends to keep pump fulling submerged then.

A fiver when empty? :o

With the Monza you had to put 2 full cans in it before it would even think about going! if it had ran out
