Only noticed it today, can't hear in the car, I got out to put the bin out and heard a knocking sound,   hard to tell were it was coming from but is it likely to be a hydraulic tapet? It was gone when I got to work when the engine was warm.

What are the possibilities?

when was the oil last changed? and was it genuine vaux oil?

As I dont do alot of mileage I change every 6 months regardless of mileage and use genuine vaux oil and filter.

I think most people do a change every 4k

I'd say a light knock rather than a tap

Last service was about 8 months go approx, I ussually do it every 6 but just been putting it off recently. Its now getting a service on Sat morning and the guy is gonna has a listen to it after when its been stood a while and should be cold

As markey mark above - couple of oil & filter changes cured noisy "tappet" on my V6.

Have known air con compressor make knocking on start up,you can take aux belt off, and run briefly, this checks out some other obvious things also.

Cheers for the idea's chaps, I will keep my fingers crossed that the oil and filter change tomorrow will fix it!!

And as for the word filter!! Nah I disagree, what harm does text speak do? people are that used to using these abreviations, like me I don't know I am doing it, and when I post from my PDA its even more easy to use them as my phone remembers them and predicts them.

I just think it makes the post look messy and makes the poster look a twit!!

Its just force of habbit for me. Anyway thats my piece! said it now!! hehe
