Oil filter stuck
« on: 20 February 2009, 20:26:55 »

Hello,
I have a 2000 2.5 V6 with the cartidge type oil filter with the alloy cap(not the metal cannister type).  Tried to change the filter today but the cap will not come off - the whole assembly, including the case that goes into the crankase, turned (yes I was it turning it the right way).  Has anyone come across this before and if so do you have any ideas on how to get the cap off so I can change the filter?

Some muppet has overtightened the filter cap .. it should only be 15 Nm ... the only way I know is to use a strap wrench to hold the body whilst using a socket on the cap ...  if you try and use a drive in the square hole you are likely to split the cap.

If that doesn't work and the body keeps spinning it is possible, but fiddly and messy, to keep spinning the body until the whole filter comes off and you can dismantle it on a bench.

Body to engine bolt should be 45 Nm (I think) cap to body 15 Nm

Thanks - the strap wrench did the trick (and skinned my knuckles).    Everything seems OK now except I am unsure if turning the body has misaligned anything (oilways?).  As for muppets I always try and avoid them - but such is life!

Thanks once again

Shouldn't have done  .. AFAIK the oil feed is through the centre bolt (hollow) of the case to engine ... HTH
