Fault code 31... No RPM present
« on: 23 February 2009, 19:23:38 »

Hi all,
Hoping someone can shed some light on a problem i have when trying to start my omega estate 2.5 v6. Car always turns over without hesitation and when started runs fine. But sometimes it takes 5 or 6 turns of the key, even with taking the key out for a few seconds and starting the procedure again.
Took the car to my friends garage and with diagnostic check(think he used a tech 2), it came up with code 31 no rpm present with the engine running. He said he thinks it is a sensor but not sure which one. He said rather than checking and changing them all and him charging me for the privilege we were hoping somebody on this forum might be able to point us straight to the problem.

Many thanks
Tony

It can't be a Present code if the engine was running.

Rather than pay him for diagnostics, see Maintenence Guides for 'paperclip test'

For info, code 19 is dead certain failing crank sensor. If engine doesn't run, 31 is inconclusive.  31 with engine running isn't possible on v6.

Under what circumstances is the poor starting?

Thanks for speedy reply.   Apologies, new at this.  The car had a LAUNCH code reader plugged into it on Friday with the engine running in my presence. And this came up with the no rpm present fault.
Today it had the tech 2 plugged in and i assumed engine would be running this time also, but i was not present, and owing to your reply this is obviously not the case. Again apologies for poor information.
Oh and the problem exists at no particular interval, car may be stood for 5 mins or overnight. No real pattern.

Cheers

Next time it does it, try paperclip test then and there :)

Sounds like possible crank sensor but as TB says 31 not possible with engine running as if the engine was getting no signal from the crank sensor it wouldnt start in the first place  :y
