Cam Cover
« on: 23 February 2009, 14:44:04 »

My cam cover has quite a few cracks and that did not improve when I took it off to change the timing belt.

Would it be OK to drive a few days without cover (all cables are secured)

And does someone have a spare cover collecting dust?

The cover is there to stop the oil from the cams shooting out all over the place as you are driving along. :o :o

It is all so easy for the covers when in place to leak oil anyway, and when it does it goes down the sides of the engine, into the spark plug holes!  Well it does on a V6, so I believe that is true of the 4 pot.

In short, no do not drive it without the cam cover! :D :D ;)

well in all fairness...when changing the cam belt you don't take the cam cover off only the cam belt cover ::) :)

No perhaps not, but on here "cam covers", which do create problems on miggies, are different than cam belt covers.  Therefore, as this is a technical motor Forum, using the correct names is very important! ::) ::) ::)

Only trying to help mate! ::) ::) ::) ::) :(

No I would not

I have heard of stones kicked up and catching in the belt and pulleys. Not on an Omega but I would not want to risk it.

Maybe Lizzie...but I do believe the part you are referring to is called a 'rocker cover'  ;)

NOT on a miggie, where it IS called a cam cover! ::)

Rocker covers were on the cars I used to work on almost 40 years ago, when they had push rods and rockers, operating the valves, then usually just two per cylinder. ;)

The last thing I am going to say on this is modern cars, like miggies, have cams, thus they have cam covers due to them not having rockers any more, so rocker covers are NOT the term on miggies!

I tried to give you advice on your original question and the terminology you used, which is wrong for miggies.

You used the wrong term and now you cannot be polite enough to admit it (because I am a woman?? ::) ::)).  There is no helping some people!! >:( >:( >:(

Enough said!! >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Nope, no rockers on an Omega engine, cam cover is the correct term for the cover over the cams.

Cam belt cover is the cover over the cam belt (obvious really)  :y

Anyway, try one of the breakers on here as they may have one.

Beware that the Omega one is differenent to that used on the Vectra/Astra etc as it does not ahev the 3 additional holes for the engine damper bracket.

There should be no problem locating one of these.
Look in the 'Car parts etc' section or try a local breakers/scrapyard.
