TD Fuel Consumption (still)
« on: 21 January 2009, 18:32:01 »

right, no visible leaks from tank, fuel lines, pump, filter etc.  Maybe tiniest weep from top of injector to fuel pipe, but nothing that could explain this.

Still struggling to get 30mpg, computer reckons high 30s mpg (have been caning it ::)).

I have one theory, but guessing not finacially viable.

So, any ideas before it gets recycled into a washing machine?  :'(

A suggestion :y try putting the standard chip back in for a couple of weeks,
reason, the chip in yours is chucking vast amounts of fuel in to make power, maybe just maybe your not burning it all properly? by putting original chip in you are not able to chuck so much fuel in so if you have a slightly worn injector not so much fuel will pass so may sort your consumption probs ,
got to be worth a try just for peace of mind?

that was my plan once this 10g has gone (so I can work out current economy).

My theory is a leaking/scored injector :(

thats what made suggest the chip if it is slightly scored or worn the chip wont help consumption at all, usually tho a scored or worn injector will cause the engine to knock, however diesel knock is very hard to describe in writing you would have to hear it a couple of times to be able to identify it :y
not sying the chip change will sort it but would definetly help with the lower injector pressures :y

You've heard the engine, do you recall a knock?

strangely enough it always sounded slightly "off" when it was cold to me but i just thought it was a characteristic of your engine!!!
but no didnt hear any diesel knock that would have suggested porly injector last time i heard it! thats not to say you dont have a scored injector tho!!! :y

Always a bit of a clatter when cold.

a new set of injectors does not make financial sense, so unless I can prove 100%, it will be converted to baked bean cans  :'(

are the same injectors used on the bmw's that have this engine? reason i ask is that the polish guys that tok my engine from the tractor I broke, will still have the omega ones (if not the same) or the bmw's own ones (if they are the same)

I can ask for a set back for you.

cheers

some injector cleaner shops have testing equipment..a flow rate test will give ideas as they are visible inside the tubes..

Is your tractor manual or auto?
The reason I'm asking is that the autos I've come across seem to struggle to get 30mpg - Markseth's was one example.
Since you chipped my manual, I'm getting a near constant 33mpg. I'm sure that Pitchfork's returns similar figures, and reckon this is realistic for a near-2 ton motor.
Financial viability aside, I go along with the injector theory here.
Just one 'dribbling' injector will play havoc with your consumption figures.

So, any ideas before it gets recycled into a washing machine?  :'(

dont know if it helps but i have a similar issue.
Current Comp says 22 MPG but get 180 miles out of tank - 2.6 engine
- previous mig said 19 MPG but got 220 out the tank - 2.0 engine
both tanks run until petrol pump symbol flashed. :-?
