Bumpy handling
« on: 09 March 2009, 21:15:09 »

Hi all. I have had my 2001 v6 2.6 estate for a week or so now and I would appreciate advice on suspension:

I find that the front end handling is 'lumpy' I drive over some country roads to work and it feels as though I can feel every tiny bump in the road through the steering wheel! I've driven worse, but I expected better from an Omega. I suspect that it may need new dampers. (It's done 114k). I dunno, I just feel that it should feel smoother than it does. There are no knocking joints that I can hear. It's fine on motorways. No wandering or anything. How much difference might the tyre pressure make? the day after I got it I pumped up the tyres to levels mid-way between 'full load' and 'up to three persons' because I had to carry a fair weight in the back on that day. but I haven't set them back to the 'up to three persons' pressure yet. Could that make a significant difference? I've got 36psi in the front and 44psi in the back. Thanks in advance for any help.  :)

Sounds like maybe the wishbones mate (nackard bushes). If you brake hard do you hear a clunking sound from the front you may have to put the window down to hear but try with the window shut and open. Hope this helps mate.

Thanks Lee. I'll try that then. I don't think it should 'feel the bumps' as much as it does, although, as I said I've driven worse. I've had a Vectra before and the handling was much smoother over bumps. My last car was a Modeo estate and although it was awful in many other respects, the front end suspension and steering felt much more positive and control-able. The best front end handling on any car that I ever owned was that of my old Carlton. That was superb! In fact that's one of the reasons I went for an Omega this time. Must say though, I really love this 'Miggi'! Apart from the above. Everything else about it seems to be just fine. You don't think it's the shockers then?

Oh yeah! Come to think of it, I remember hearing about that test for shockers some time ago. Thanks Morgan. I'll try that as well tomorrow.

Cheers. You guys are very helpful thanks. Much appreciated.

It mite be your shockers i had a problem like yours and it was the wishbones but it could very well be your shocks but i also thought of the cheap fix first and also good to check them out anyway if they have never been done like mine and i have around the same milage.

...So did it turn out to be the wishbones in your case then? Did it handle the bumpd better after they were changed? Are they expensive to have done?

it was the shockers on myn

i replaced the wishbones because i noticed my 2x 3month old tyres were nearly nackerd on the inside edges i then checked the bushes and noticed the 2x big ones on each side had started splitting

OK, So it looks like either the shockers, wishbones, or possibly both. I'll get them checked. I'm def gonna get it fixed though because apart from thst I love the car. The bodywork's in decent condition and that v6 is as sweet as a nut! Sounds, and performs gorgeous!

Any recommendations with regard to a vx-friendly garage in West/South Yorkshire?? ...Would be willin to travel further for a really well recommended place.

It was in my case there not that bad price wise.  You would be better replacing the hole thing not just the bush if you buy the hole thing it comes with the bushs already in and there not to bad to fit you could do it yourself as i did plus there are a few members near you i'm sure if you asked they would give you a lift to fit them.   :y :y
Try and find out which it is first and then go from there mate.
