Torque Converter Clutch

I've discovered the TCC aint working on my cars auto box. I have done some research and it would seem that the clutch should lock the torque coneverter in 3rd and 4th, and sometimes also in 2nd if the box temperature is too high.

It would appear to be activated via a solenoid somewhere near the bottom of the gearbox. I am waiting for a Haynes manual which will hopefully give me some idea of the electrical schematics of the thing.

So, has anyone else had this problem, then hopefully cured it? Is there a fuse or electrical solenoid involved in a fuse box that I can check? Would low ATF levels cause this (the box performs fine otherwise).

Also, I have read that on some cars, the paperclip trick can be used to read the Gearbox ECU by shorting different pins. Is this true of a 97 Omega?

Hi,
As far as I am aware, the TC clutch only locks up at around 40 to 50 MPH when in 4th gear and entirely dependent on load.  Does not operate in any other gear, or temperature dependent.

It is activated by a solenoid.  All the operating solenoids are in the bottom of the gearbox, and are actuated by the transmission ECU .  Haynes will not help much, just shows lines going to control module. There are no fuses to the individual solenoids.

Low ATF would give other symptoms rather than just not functioning TC clutch, but is always good to ensure there is correct level.

Paperclip test not available for transmission fault codes as far as I know.

I think the first thing I would check is the operation of the TC clutch cut out switch on the brake pedal.

Only ever had this type of problem on a Carlton. This was a litle chip of metal lodged under the solenoid valve seat so it didn't close fully and caused clutch to slip a bit.

not aware of paper clip test reading anything other than engine ecu. you need tech 2 for any other ecu on the car.

If sevicing the box atf doesn't help, that only really leaves the selector switch to fiddle with without removing the box, but see what others say.

Exactly what symptoms do you have?

No drive is usually bad, b ut breakers on here usually do ar35 boxes for fair money.

Torque convertor locks up in 3rd aswell as 4th, as did your Carlton.

Definately in third - with the 2.0 it used to be in third when towing

Thanks guys, I'll look at my brake pedal just in case (would this really disengage the clutch?). In fact, thinking about it, the cruise control works fine and turns off when i brake so it probably isn't that. The gearbox behaves normally apart from never locking the TC.

I got the info about 3rd/ 4th and sometimes 2nd gear locking from page 4 of this pdf; http://images.omegaowners.com/downloads/Autobox_Docs/4L30E_Article.pdf

"TCC is normally applied in 3rd and
4th gears, but in some models, if the
fluid temperature gets too high, TCC
applies in 2nd gear. TCC is released
during all upshifts and downshifts."
