Gearbox (Manual) being difficult
« on: 16 March 2009, 21:59:11 »

Hi all, i've noticed over the last week that my gearbox is getting a bit awkward to go into 3rd and 4th gear. It goes in but you have to guide it rather than doing it naturally. It's fine when cold but once it warms up it can be annoying. I've flushed the oil out and replaced it with the correct stuff from VX and its still the same. All other gears are fine. Is this the sign of a clutch going?. When i first got the car 18 months ago it was a bit awkward from 1st to 2nd. Done 125K.
Any ideas?

I don't think that it's a clutch problem. if the clutch was the problem the car would't go as fast as before with the same rpm number, and the rpm's would go up and down a little when you pushed the acceleration without accelerating at first.
I had the clutch exchanged one month ago(and it wasn't cheap).
Your problem is probably with the gearbox, the synchro mechanism actually. I had the same thing long time ago on my fiat croma then.

Havee you tried bleeding your clutch master/slave cylinder? It's generally regarded here that you 'reverse bleed' it, ie force brake fluid in via the nipple using a pressure bleed kit. Never done it myself though .... I only have 2 pedals.
When I bled my Astra's clutch I bled it with the pedal pushed all the way down ....... not sure if that made ant difference  :-/ :y :y

Thanks MutantCav .Are they the same gearbox on all the manuals?
How much you asking for one of them?

And thanks Andy B, maybe a bleed of the system would help. I've just done the brake pads all round. Would that upset the system? The front pads were down to nothing (had to push the pistons right back in) could have got some air in there. Brakes are fine, not spongy

Change the hydraulic fluid first and check the gearbox oil level  :y
