Rear Diff - Now with photos
« on: 12 March 2009, 13:04:40 »

Hi,

Had a rather annoying whining sound from the back end. Though it was the autobox but it's much further back and I've topped up the box fluid this morning, well...mainly poured it over myself...but there you go!

Could it be the brake shoes sticking? Don't get the noise on 'P' or 'N' but do hear it as soon as you pull away.

p.s it did have rear pads in about 1K ago.

Is the diff pinion seal leaking at all?

the diff can whine if low on fluid.

Is that what sits at the back end and sets the drive to the wheels??

I did notice a little oil there, amongst other places. i'll jack it up and see if I can get a pic tommorrow morning.

Big job??

Ok, here are some photos taken at 6am this morning! Neighbours must think i'm crazy!

I've never noticed any oil dropped where I park it or anywhere else. The noise could well be the diff and it's clearly leaking oil but I'm not sure how bad a case that is compared to others??

Is it a similar top up to the gearbox sump?

What is the correct oil to use?

There is a filler plug somewhere on it...I will have to have a look at the LSD one sat in my garage to see where it is...looks like its leaking quite badly, might need to get the seals sorted at some point...

Might not be any fluid on your drive if its all leaked out lol SAE 90 is what you need for the diff unless you have an LSD :y

AHA! My mig is doing exactly the same thing - whining frm the rear, with increasing pitch the faster I go.

I'd better jack the back up and have a look - at least I now know what i'm looking at.  :y

EDIT: Diff oil change guide is here: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1161520937

Thanks all, a picture does paint a thousand words, how did we ever get on before the digital age. Oh yeah, the boys learnt mechanics, girls learnt cookery!

I'm thoroughly skint after settling my final tax bill so it's going to have to be a top up for now and a hope it doesn't just piss straight out the bottom.

I read it's a T50 torx which i think I have, I can get the oil easily. Is it the same as doing the gearbox oil, fill till it spills?? Approx how much does the diff hold??

Thanks

Make 100% sure you have something under the diff if you take the cover plate off to empty the oil and replace it all...and wear really old clothing...the stuff REALLY stinks and stays on you and your clothes for 100 washes as the oil generally only gets changed every 60-100k

Couldn't agree more Chris! that stuff smells like stale cat pi55 and you can't get rid of the smell no matter what you do!
