"Lucky" Failed Alternator/ABS/TC ECU??

Ok so yesterday the battery light started to gently glow...oh dear I thought Alternator...checked battery and though fully tight the negative terminal is loose on the battery, very odd! so changed over the battery this morning for a fully charged one and the glow went away after about half a mile...maybe not I thought...

Off to Lincoln...happy days!

So about 5 miles away from home speedo and rev counter flicker...eh up...shortly after ABS/TC lights on, steering heavy but still got speedo at this point, but also display gone dim...not long before losing speedo/rev counter and fuel meter (and I know fuel is low)...so replacement ABS/TC ECU needed...

As I'm coming into Gainsborough the cars starting to splutter a little too...pre warning of imminent fuel exhaustion...as I turn across into the petrol station engine cuts out and steering goes VERY heavy as a result...roll up to the petrol pump...wow thats lucky! :)

Put in £20 of fuel...turnkey to start engine...battery is flat...petrol station is run by my next door neighbour who lends me his car to jump start the car...wow thats lucky! :)

Battery is so dead it wont jump start but petrol station is opposite a garage who lend me a jump start pack which needs to remain connected to the battery for the half mile journey home...guy knows where I live and happily lends me the pack so I can get us home...swap battery over and pop the pack back to him and get car home...wow thats lucky! :)

Have a replacement 3.0 alternator in the garage to fit tomorrow...

Question is, will the 2.5 abs/tc ecu I have from a 2000 CDX (same part number) do the job and get the steering etc back until I get what I need...and what does the tech2 reprogramming to say its now in a 3.0 actually achieve? And until its tech2'd or replaced with a 3.0 one what will it not do correctly?

Also it seems very likely that the alternator overcharging and the ABS/TC ECU failing are linked...was suggested on another post that his went after jump starting and the failures generally seem to have been in winter when battery has gone flat etc...does this seem like a common link or have other people had failures not related to failing batteries/alternators??

TBH, sounds no more to me than a shagged alternator which has killed the battery - but would await someone what is more cleverer than wot I is....   ;)

Chris should cure everything except TC (and TC light) without Tech2, AFAIK

Well I'm going to work in a sensible order anyway and do the alternator first see where we are then...is it just a matter of removing the multiram for access then slipping off the aux belt by moving the tensioner over undoing the nut/bolt and the electrics and swapping over? May as well do the other work needed to try get rid of the code 61 too :y

Had a look at Marks DTM excellent guide to repairing the alternator...is this something worth doing and is the regulator etc easy to get from Vaux? If so how much on TC does anyone know?

Think I will stick the replacement on after checking under the cover plate to see how good it is, and repair the old one for spares :y

Is it worth updating the how to to include removal afterwards, or a new how to as it doesnt seem to be covered anywhere?

Cool Hotel called it right, he must be cleverer than wot he finks! :y

Took old alternator off which looked in brand new condition so decided to swap the good bits from the other alternator into the new one...put back together and jobs a goodun! ABS/TC lights back off and steering good...

While I was at it swapped the SAI pump and horns and now have no annoying whine and horn works (although I think its only multi tonal currently...

In addition while I was on a role I swapped over the little valve behind the drivers side head that the carbon cannister goes into and voila, it seems to have cured the code 61 (thanks to Markey Mark for the replacement valve :y )

SO what was wrong with the alternator then I hear you cry...



Can you spot whats wrong??

Hmmmm brushes snapped off brush pack, or did they break when you removed it ?

One was snapped off hence it not working, the other snapped off after removal so cant have been far behind anyway...nice easy fix though :y Is it possible to buy this part new does anyone know, or do you have to buy the whole alternator?

Most Bosch regulator/brush packs where available seperatly. Allthough that was a few years back now.
Some of the other manufacturer packs where also available.
I would suggest a good parts shop would be able to advise.

As said, a decent autopark should be able to sort you out Mutant - when i was avin my leccy problems checked around for spares and a couple of places round here had replacement packs with regulator and bush parts for most makes, Bosch, Valeo and so on, from about £20 without any T/C type discount - so should be the same down your way mate.  :y

I would not bother unless you replace the bearings to.

Are the bearings hard to replace? TBH the alternator looks nearly brand new that was on the car...which is why I just swapped the bits over from the working one :y
