Air Conditioning not working
« on: 02 April 2009, 20:27:38 »

A this has been the first hot day since buying the car, and getting it on the road. The aircon does not seem to putting out any cold air. I have tried it at it lowest setting (no difference), on looking at the compressor the centre clutch (maybe something else) does not appear to be turning with the fan belt.

Any ideas would be welcome, as to where to start looking for the fault......

You may have a leak in system, if gets below a certain level the clutch wont kick in.  To get re-gassed will be approx 60 of your english pounds. May be worth getting system checked first to see if is leaking before re-gass.   :)

NB if air con is not used on regular basis the seals don't get lubricated and system could spring a leak.

I had similar problem last year turns out the condenser was leaking, needed replacing.  ( there's an excellant "how to" on replacing the condenser if needed)

System will not start up if there is insufficient refridgerent. Any luminous green traces on the pipework?

You can buy a regas kit and do it yourself just as cheap.

Took the gamble and went to Kwikfit, as usual they performed like trained monkey's, but after 3 attempts and 3.5 hours its working OK. Got a discount on the normal price of £45, due to the long wait and i had to read the manual for them.

All in not a bad morning's work, and for £30 got a cold car.........

..... but for how long? If you were down on gas it could just be natural losses over the years, but more likely to bea leak somewhere eg condensor or compressor.  :y
