Oil leak from oil pressure sensor
« on: 09 April 2009, 09:44:03 »

Is this common? My engine leaks from "somewhere very low" in the front of engine, most of the oil  and crud is around the oil pressure sender. Can it be re-sealed with teflon-type pipework-sealing tape or do I buy a new sensor? Is it more likely to leak from the thread or is it the sensor itself which is leaking?

I have once or twice seen a sensor fail and it results in a fine mist around that area.

The sensors here are under a tenner so about 120NOK (sorry only localish currency I can convert) I would guess tops (although if its inflated like Norways prices then add a 0!)

Do you think it's of any use to take it out and re-seal it with thread-tape?

Thread tape will only be any help if it is around the thread where the leak is coming from and thats quite unlikely i think.

No, its normaly a pin hole in the pressure diaphram and hence it exits through the electrical terminal

Ok, will try a new sensor then, for that price the damage is not bad. What if it ain't that one, where is the next "most common" source of leaks? Crankshaft seal I suppose, oil pan it is not...
