Started the car to come home after work and put it in 'R'
The box took a long time to engage the gear
Put it drive and again it took sometime to engage.
On the drive home the gears were not engaging and the RPM short off the scale twice.
Got home 40 miles in manual mode with the "Automatic Gearbox" on the display.
Just spent an hour getting the car level on stands and check the level.
It needed 200ml to bring to the filler plug.
Took the car for a quick drive 5 miles and the gears changed no problem.
being short of 200ml does not explain the problem on the drive home.
Any ideas

perhaps its time to give it a complete fluid change & filter clean, has worked for others in the past

I would say it does mate, its fixed.

would suggest servicing the box to be safe, ie change the atf and clean or swap filter. It will probablly  have over heated the fluid. any leaks?

The fluid was changed about 20k ago when I changed the front seal and bush, but I must admit I did not change of clean the filters.
How much approx are new filters?
I assume I can just drop the Gearbox sump to change them

i dont know how much the filters are but could contact JPAT as i think they do them, what colour was the atf when you checked the level? & i trust you used dexron III, i say this because some hand books [like mine] lists dexronII but in fact should be dexronIII, i hope that makes sense

Depends where you get the filters from to how much they are I suppose. I get mine from a guy on ABS (autobahnstormers) for £40 thats for sump gaskets and gearbox filter. You will then nneed about 7.5 litres of DexIII gearbox oil

Have you seen the top up procedure in maintenance guide section? link below, do you think the level was correct after the work done? just trying to explane the missing 200mill. But fairly sure that would explane the symptoms tbh

vx filters are almost £70 luckily i got several parts at the same time so having spent a wedge they where happy to llet ma take it back if i didnt need it. When removed it was in good nick so i just cleaned the old one and took the new one back. two sumps with gaskits, filter is in the big one with level plug.

Edit to add; its a bit of a gamble which yhou do, other suppliers are cheaper but will they take it back if not needed

I drove the car to work today (40 miles) and as I got towards the end of the trip I had problems pulling away. The auto appears to be slipping in 1st but once on the move the box worked ok and I could use kick down. Is this a low fluid problem, I may have lost some on the way to work or could it be temp related, not working when hot?

It woulr be worth re-setting the brake abnd....but thats a sump off job.

I am going to take the sump off over the weekend to do the filter.
How do you do brake band ajustment on the old BW35/65 boxes it was done using a torque wrench.

Mine is suffering very similar problems.

Top ups just cause mucky fluid to run out.

Havent yet tried adjusting brake band, need 5nm torque wrench.

Not sure I am accurate enough for the job.

could also be thrust washer.

Mine drops out every few days now.


Seriously thinking about getting a new box.

Think I have access to someone who has swapped many boxes and has a lift

I assume I just take the sump off as there is no drain plug, and get a lap full of Trans fluid.

If you undo one side, but loosen the other, you can sort of slosh most of it out

Is there a "how to" for brake band ajustment, I have a  torque wrench
that can go to 5nm. looks like I am going to have a fun easter weekend, because it's almost undrivable at the moment.
