cam belt help
« on: 13 April 2009, 13:28:56 »

Hi Everyone

My omega has developed a rather alarming rattle/knocking sound from behind the cam belt cover I'm thinking it is one of the pulleys :-[ i was thinking about changing the cam belt kit and water pump myself but realise i don't have the right tools :-/ does anyone know or can recommend a mechanic/competent person in the Hemel Hempstad area who may be able to do it
Also any idea on how much it should cost to do ? (labour wise) as i don't trust garages >:(
any help gratefully received :)
Thanks Gavin

Don't know of anywhere trustworthy in that area.  Cambelt DVD from OOF shop http://shop.omegaowners.com for £3 show you how to do it.

I can get my v6 cambelt locking/timing to Leagrave/Luton within a few days (one of my colleagues lives there), if that helps (I will not mess about posting cambelt tools due to cost and the difficultly getting them back due to our local sorting office's opening hours

Do you have any history of last change? should be done every four years or 40k or is this your aux belt tensioner bearing on front of engine?

Yes i do have a recipt for a new cam belt at 70,000 miles but it is only for the belt (priced £22.00) not the whole kit, mileage is now 110,000 and i was planning to get it changed when this happened  :-/ as for the auxiliary tensioner how would i know ? as i don't want to start the engine any more for fear of causing more dammage :-[

Thanks Gav

Autovaux hire the locking kit for abot £20 (plus £100 deposit)
You'll also need a 30mm offset ring spanner.

Bought all my bits from autovaux for £150 which included cambelt kit, water pump, auxillary belt and 5 litres of GM longlife coolant.

I phoned the dealer for a quote after to see how much i saved and they wanted £620 quid to do the job :o :o :o

Watch the dvd then do it yourself :y

I've done it from the DVD - first job I ever did on my car without mechanical experience - and provided you take your time, and follow the DVD, it's easy to do.

As mentioned above, Autovaux will hire out the cambelt locking kit, that's what I did and bought all the parts from them too.

Thanks everyone for your posts  :)

RobseyMV6 kindly restored my faith in human kind by popping round to have a look and found that indeed it was a cam belt pulley that was shot to bits :-[ but the engine is still timed so there should be no damage  [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif] he is going to pop back in the week and help me fit a new cam belt kit (I think I'll be the one holding the spanners and making the tea whilst looking amazed !)  :D

Thanks again everyone especially Rob

Seeing as you've ordered the DVD, I'm sure he'll let you do it (under his watchful eye), while he makes the tea ;D
