Dodgy Air Con - strange noise from engine bay
« on: 20 April 2009, 20:21:17 »

Noticed a strange whining noise from engine compartment on my 2.6 V6 today - seems to be coming from the aircon compressor. Also notice that the aircon is not chilling anymore. All connections to compressor and all aircon lines and hoses seem OK and no sign of leaks. Is it possible for these systems to run dry? Is this easy to reolve with jsut a recharge? If so, does it have to be done at a stealers or can I take it to a so called "specialist"?

Any help would be greatly appreciated  :y

Low pressure would stop air-con coming on if gas was low.

Sounds like low gas isn't the problem as the compressor making a noise meaning the compessor clutch engaging.  Could be the magnetic clutch on the compressor slipping, it usually a screetching noise though, otherwise its the compressor as you say your getting no cold air at all.  Any good air con specialist can change the clutch and pulley or check it out for you.

Thanks mate - that makes sense - it actually sounded like a clutch slipping when I went to look at it. Do you happen to know any aircon specialists in the Glasow / Central Scotland area?

Now noticed that engine is running hot too. Car has run at no more than 80 degrees for the past 18 months - today fluctuating wildly between 85 and 95 degrees. Could this be related to the aircon problem above??  :-/

... or does this meega know that I'm getting another meega on Friday???   ::) ::)

Not that I have any background experience, but i currently face the same thing. As a strike of good luck (or not) the drivebelt snapped, so I got a golden oppertunity to investigate the matter. I discovered that the outer plate on the pulley was touching the pulley at a certain point.. Didn't know what to about it, but carefully knocked it with the hammer on the thrust side, and applied plenty of engineoil between the plate and the pulley. That seemed to solve the noise for NOW, but since i really don't know what I'm doing, I don't know whats gonna happen tomorrow!  ;) The pulley certainly rolled alot easier....

Fair point. Sometimes it's easy to overlook the obvious things... like a quirt of oil. I'll give it a try    :y
