Cleaning Oil Breathers - How Often
« on: 01 April 2009, 13:50:32 »

Afternoon All,

Quick question ref how often would you expect to have to clean the oil breathers on a 2.2...?  Did mine approx 10k ago and it looks like they need doing again.  Main breather from cam cover to air intake was fairly gunked-up....although it did all come out reasonable easily......on the company car park that is....oops...!!! ::)

Cheers

Depends how long your journeys are to work and back. If you do short journeys then i would clean them out every time you do an oil change to keep on top of them. If your journeys are alot longer then 1 a year maybe.

Any thoughts on the frequency of oil changes...?  I try and do mine between 8 and 10K

3-4k or once every two months, that should keep every thing clear.

My 2.2 oil is changed with Vx semi synth every 3000 miles and the only part of the breather system that has had any gunk in it is the metal pipe from the oil sump - rest is clean as a whistle.

The type and even make of the oil can make a difference  :y

my 2.2 does fairly short journeys (11 miles each way)
I change my oil every few months, I also clean that smaller breather pipe on the top with every change. it runs sooo much smoother since I started changing it myself.

Cheers...sounds like it's advisable to check the breathers at each oil change then......!

would this be similar for my 2.2 dti.?  its done 158K and not serviced as much as it should be so probably needs a good clean out of hoses, valves eg egr valve, maf sensor etc - any help, guidance and pics appreciated.

when you cleaned the small pipe, did you also clean the metal nozzle below the throttle body that it attaches to?  If not it will be blocked solid and will explain why the pipe is gunking up again.
