2.6 autobox problem
« on: 29 April 2009, 16:41:29 »

good afternoon everyone, just been noticing a problem with my 2.6 auto box. i guess its been there a while but its relly noticable now. sometimes the box will shift perfectly, there are times when it shifts the 1st 2nd and then clonks into 3rd, sometimes it refuses to shift out of 1st unless i get it upto 4000revs. Spoken to my local mechanic who reckons i need new solenoids filter and fluid. is that about right? Also my gear stick shakes quite a bit while driving. i reckon thats the gearbox mounting. could that also be causing the erratic chaning? any help would be appreciated.
thank you

sounds like normal"box needs a service" to me. Atf is dextron 3. Solenoids should be diagnosed via tech 2  not a mechs gut feeling, but you should find all will be well once serviced. But what ever happens dont panic, boxs can be had from breakers on here for fair money. Get him to check the engine and box mounts while under there.

Handeling will be bushes most likely. Wishbones at the front and donuts under rear door. Also check springs and stearing idler.

Ps what tires you got?

Edit, sorry i read eratic handling for some reason. Not eratic changing, whoops. :-)

The AR 25 and AR 35 boxes on the later models have an adaptive shift pattern. Whilst alot of your symptons do seem to indicate it is in need of a good service, is the delay in changing up from 1st at 4000 rpm you mentioned when then engine is cold, just started and pulling away.

If so then this is normal behaviour, the box is delaing changing to bring the cats upto operating temperature quicker, thereby putting the system into closed loop mode earlier and making the car operate more efficiently.

i did ask the mechanic if there was a way of checking the state of solenoids through a diagnostic check and i was told no. I was thinking id be a good idea to just give it a service and see how it goes because ive been quoted quite a fat price for solenoids. And no, the 4000rpm shift problem happens quite a few times whether its hot or cold!!

ps. thats fine abt the handling! no problems there, its the gearbox!

sounds like a plan to me. There are 3 or 4 tech2 owners on here but i see your in cardiff so that would make your nearest in Alton Hants i guess. But service the box and in from there. The filter can be cleaned if in good nick, they are £67 from vx last i looked. Fuchs titan 4000 is recommended for dextron 3. German and swedish stock it if you have one near you. And youll need the 2 sump gaskits.

If you join AutoBahnStormers there's a member there who does gaskets plus filter for around 30 quid IIRC.

Checking the autobox ECU for codes would be worthwhile next time you're close to one of the Tech 2s.
