Coolant leak - is it time to sell?
« on: 29 April 2009, 20:43:57 »

I'm getting through several litres of water on a 40 mile round trip.  :(

Seems to be escaping from rear of engine.  No obvious signs of oil in water or vice versa, but I've been reliably informed it looks like head gasket (and no, my name's not Wayne).

Not a job I fancy myself, and garage labour would probably amount to more than the car's worth - so maybe it's time to pass the car onto someone who would nurse her through her old age?

Facelift MV6 Estate, 155K miles, cambelt done at Xmas by James, niggling lambda sensor warning (which is definitely not lambda sensors) - but otherwise is good shape and well cared for.  Anyone interested?

My guess .....

Leak from rear of engine + no oil in water + no water in oil = Heater Bypass Valve

lots of history on here about this problem.

Edit .. must type faster .. :)

so would I.  I'm off to Swindon on monday so possible could meet you.  May be better to meet on the way back as I've got the ex SWMBO with me in the morning.....

almost certainly HBV if you were losing that amount of water via the HG you'd be in deep stuff now.  It will be cheap fix...

Yes  :y

If it't not HBV, it may be corner of HG on the 246 bank - not unheard of  :-/

We all said that about MaxV6's Elite - it would lose coolant in 15 miles and need more - and it was HG on 246.  I ended up doing the heads on it

Many thanks for the kind offers of help!  :y :)

Seems to be passenger side of the engine bay, by the way.

I'm certainly around on Monday if you've got time to drop by - and if it turns out to be the HBV then I'd be a very happy bunny...  :-/

Cheers,
Baz.

Garage has today confirmed not HBV - coolant clearly coming from gasket.   :'(

So thanks for all the offers, but not sure there's much point in a "watch the leak" party on Monday.  I'll be around though if any prospective purchasers are passing and want to take a look...  :-/

Cheers, Baz.

Out of interest which garage did you give it to ? I live in Brackley and use BVS, The guy who owns it (Tom) knows a lot about Omegas and has always given me good advice in the past.

Cheap too  :y

Might be worth a second opinion ?
