Oil Cooler
« on: 02 May 2009, 21:12:43 »

Evening all...

I don't like to admit it, but I have been defeated in my attempt to undo the oil pipe unions from the block (above oil filter).

I used a 19mm crows foot spanner and swung on it (just after i'd ate my weetabix), but it still would'nt budge and I'm scared stiff of doing some damage.

Can anyone tell me if it would do any major damage to continue running it with a failing oil cooler, and if they get worse quickly?

At the moment, I am topping coolant up by about a jug full every 1000 miles or so, and coolant looked like vegatable oil, although I flushed it and it does'nt look bad at the minute.

The coolant is almost certainly leaking from the oil cooler cover plate, as I have had it stripped down to the oil cooler already.

Thanks  :( :'(

Try tightening the union just a little, and then seeing if it will back off.

Plenty of plus gas, too...

Don't drive with a shagged cooler....

def dont drive with failed oil cooler.

I had similar problem on my 2.5 when repairing cover plate. Had to bend the pipes in the end. Its not recommended at all as your risk cracking the pipes and is makes removing cover and cooler a seal pain. They are then stressed when re fitted which again is a pain. Def last resort....

Thought about bending them, but again, scared of breaking the pipes.

Thanks for the replies.  I really don't want to part with the car, but vauxhall have quoted £570 to change, and having bought all the stuff already, makes it even worse..The car is not worth much more than that. :( :y

hey big o bob  i had the same prob changing me cooler we spoke before, but i also could only loosen off 1 of the oil unions by the oil filter and resorted to bending the pipes just enough to get the oil cooler out.

i ask same questions and was told i would blow the head gasket if i contiued to run. be praised you havent snapped and union bolts like i did twice!!! once when taking apart and the once putting back together it added a whole week to lengh of time to finish the job :o

all done now, good luck finishing yours :y ;) :y

Cheers Kingplym.  Glad you got yours sorted mate.

I put my car back together and am looking to get it sorted, cheaper than at the vauxhall dealer, or sell as is.

Shame though, cos it's a nice car other than that.

I'll never make a mechanic anyway mate, thats for sure :D

I had a similar problem on a v6 vectra where the oil cooler pipes had been tightened by arnie s. I removed the oil filter and gently tapped the oil cooler pipe nut with a hammer and then used a large ajustable wrench on the union nut which stared to turn. Tap it gently to shock it from the death like grip it has got. good luck mate.
