Auto gearbox playing up
« on: 02 May 2009, 00:54:19 »

:-XHi.  Have 02 Omega 2.2 which has developed auto gearbox roblem and wondered if your members might have any suggestions.    Gearbox normally works well but occasionally it either goes out of drive for a few seconds as if you’ve put it in neutral then- engine will obviously rev  then goes back into gear and drives normally, OR  loses drive and goes into limp home mode.
If engine is then switched off  for about 5 seconds everything ok again for a few miles.  Oil level ok.  Problem manifdests itself less at speed than on school run. Thank you.

Still might be worth an oil and filter change.

David - can you update your profile with details of your car for this and future enquiries? It helps other forum members.

How many miles has it done please? Do you get wierdness on the selctor switch lights alongside the gearchange stick? Any occasional ominous sounding thumps when changing up?

First port of call would be to check the fluid level in the gearbox but if you have no evidence of a fluid and filter change it's not going to do any harm.

Correction.  Sometimes does thump into top gear.  Probably more noticable when fully warmed up?   :'(

Methinks you need to do the oil and filter change anyway at that mileage. The reason for asking about thumps was mine did that but quite noticeably and with a dashboard "Gearbox" display after the thrust washer gave up. When you take the sumps off to do the oil change If the thrust washer has given up then the bits will be clearly identifiable in the sump.

Plenty of info on the forum on how to change the oil and filter if you do a search. An auto transmission place might charge you about £80 to 100 at a guess.
