start of an oil leak
« on: 06 May 2009, 14:19:45 »

Was just having a look around the engine the other night and noticed a slight oil leak from the top of the engine, it appears to be leaking around the passenger side only and then dripping down the back of the engine onto the front of the gear box, what could be the cause of such a leak? :(

cam cover gasket.

Make sure you keep the breathers clean, if not they block, and cause the cam cover seal to go.

Easy to replace, follow my guide. Only use geniune gaskets:

Its due a full service in 1000 miles , is this problem a major thing? could i leave it for a while or does it need to be done straight away, could it cause me more problems if i leave it?

It should be done straight away, you need to look at the cause, of the problem as well. Do you clean the breathers?

Its very straight forward to do the gasket as you cans see from the pics, i am useless at cars, and even i could do it.

if your getting the breathers done by a garage then demand they clean the crankcase breathers

we do have members that offer Mobile Omega Repairs JamesV6CDX & Looknee & Elite Pete try pming them for a quote

But if its done by oofers it will be done properly :y

i done it on a V6 and its not that hard! so a 4pot should be nice and simple!

I got the Halfords Professional 150 piece toolkit which i belive now is less than £100 and has all the tools i think i would ever need and a code reader diagnostic thing for £40 ... Wouldnt take long for a mechanic to charge £140 in labour  :-/ ..... plus the satisfaction of fixing it yourself  :y :y

I probably could do it myself but i just dont have the mechanical confidence to do it, id be way too worried about ballsing it up lol
So its the cam cover gaskets that are on the way out? thats not the same as the head gasket is it? because from what ive read on here that going is a magor problem  :(

No, your safe, head gasket is the main metal gasket that is sealed between the 2 big parts of the engine.

Cam cover gasket or rocker cover as it can be known is a rubber gasket that just sits undernearth the plastic ecotech cover, its just those bolts on top, its dead easy  :y
