i did the paperclip test and got a code 19 as you may have read in my previous threads with the engine not revving above 3500 rpm

my question is, is there any chance the sensor is just dirty?

and 2. i was reading in the how to section on  changing crank sensor, written  i think by mark dtm, and it stated that the cs rarly fails and it is more likely the wiring inbetween. so can i just change the wire inbetween? i am an electrician so i do posed the technology

any advise please

Cleaning will do Jack.

It is likely that the wiring fails due to the route and the heat. To be honest, I think GM's engine designer was off that week.

You won't be able to replace just the wiring, as the sensor end is a sealed unit.

Don't break about, replace it.  Anything less will means you waiting several hours for a tow truck

when it fails which it will the car will keep cutting out very very dangerous! if you have an accident because of it the police will quite rightly throw the book at you!

Cleaning wont help the wire gets melted by the exhaust manifold so you must replace re route the wire away from the exhaust and it wont fail again!

Hi kingplym.

I know you mentioned something like the crank sensor code was showing, and I could be totaly of the mark and you probably have already checked - but could it be an elactrical plug that you may have either forgot to plug back in or not plugged in fully.

It just seems very strange that as soon as you replace the oil cooler, this happens.

And as it happens, after I put mine back together, soon after my first drive - the engine management light came on.  And guess what....I had not fully plugged in the electrical connector at the back, right hand side of the (Plenum...I think) Behind the wiring harness.

It did not affect the running in anyway and the orange light did'nt come back on when I plugged it back in properly.

Just a thought mate.

I'm not sure what the electrical connector was for that I left unplugged, I agree, probably totally unrelated to the crank sensor, but as the top manifolds have just been took off, it seems very strange that the crank sensor should fail at the same time - although I know it is possible.

cheers big o bob i been checking the connections and all seems ok, but like you say it is strange that this happens to go just after i fix one problem

but that old mr sod seems to follow me, with his silly law that is apparrently true

but like tmx says if it werent pluged in the car wouldnt start or run at all, its all just so bloody inconvienent

If you are getting a 19, its a failing cranksensor - the one exception is a small percentage of cases where a faulty cranksensor has been replaced, but the code hasn't cleared.

cheers theboy but thurs before i changed hbv i was having a (damn ) good blast up the motorway. as soon as i change the hbv as soon as i start the engine for the first time as soon as i take miggy for first drive the crank sensor has gone!?

it all just too coincedental for my liking, but when sods law applied it makes sense >:(i very rarely had something that works 100% ever i lll just have to change the cs and fix the next problem that pokes it ugly head up which it most definately will

crank sensor connector on mine is further back mounted on the same post as the fuel injector plug. Its the multi ram plug you need to undo to remove the plenum iirc.
Just wonder if the code was there before the work was done?

Anyway, regardless, you could argue its no bad thing to change it anyway code or no code, due to the rooting, the sensor is fitted to the engine before its fitted in the car at the factory so for convenience its routed near the exhaust, and is the cable that fails not the sensor itself as said. Just change the bugger and route the cable away from the exhaust, youll save yourself the agro later.

Ps. Genuine sensor only, pattern only last 3 or 4 months it seems.

It is, of course, possible the crank sensor fault is unrelated to the other issues.  But needs resolving anyway, is it will let go, and you'll be waiting for a towtruck, with the Mrs nagging in your ear


If you're hbv has blown its load all over the DIS pack, that may cause issue with good sparks under load

hi there i had a 97 2.5 cd which the cs went.......was told a story by a dodgy mechanic that you can twist the wires together that go to the cs to bypass it........i didnt believe him.....but if it works ...well its a good emergency get you home fix.....
