2.5TD cold start problem
« on: 07 May 2009, 20:49:01 »

Wifey reports difficulty starting tractor the last three mornings. I'll take it to work tomorrow (seems that wife/car are conspiring to keep the bike in the garage) to see what she means. No problem starting when hot. Paperclip test doesn't find any fault codes.

(Can smell diesel when near the car. Had a big leak a few weeks back because of loose retainer ring on top of tank but the diesel smell should have cleared by now, yes?)

The fuel gauge says just over 20 litres in tank. I've seen reports that a bad lift pump can cause poor starting with a low fuel tank. Is this a probable cause of our problem?

What does the crank sensor do -- any relevance to starting problems?

Any other likely causes you can suggest?

Cheers

if its with around 20 litres in it and the glowplugs are good then its usually the lift pump causes it. there is a way to fix them posted on here somehwere? diesel smell will not evaporate!! you have to wash it away with detergent!!! :y

If you can smell diesel around the engine bay it could well be a break in one or more of the leak-off pipes. Pop the plastics off the top of the intake and have a nosy underneath. The short braided pipes can sometimes leak from either end, or can go brittle and split. Give each a little wiggle with the engine running and you`ll soon see a leak if theres one there. They`re easy replaced, and kits are available for less than a fiver in Halfrauds.  :y

Wifey was correct -- tractor was hard to start this morning. It fired once and then wouldn't start. Tried several short bursts on the starter. It wanted to start but needed a longer crank to get it going. No problem once I got it started.

This sounds like fuel starvation -- the well known lift pump problem?

Filled the tank to around 60 litres. Now the f~#**~~ diesel leak is back,

Looks like lift pump out at the weekend -- clean and new seal. Is the seal readily available, or can some kind of sealant be used?

Any tips for the lift pump service?

Cheers

If its the leak off pipes, it will start, but will take a while as you have to wait for the fuel to fill all the pipes etc.

My TD took ages to start (most starts were around 10-12 seconds worth of cranking). Since I've change the leakoff pipes, it normally starts within 1-2 seconds now. :y

Also, one longer crank is better than a few short cranks. (Just keep it under 15 seconds so you dont burn the starter motor out, and give it a rest between cranking if it doesn't start to allow it to cool down.)

Take a look in Maintenance Guides - Platty has an excellent ditty there, and I think it's on page 2.

Were town neighbours :) I had the same problem and a few more ;). 2 of my leak off pipes were soaked in disel but others looked fine, so garage only changed them. Then I joined OOF and had a look for myself worked out all of them were leaking  :( so my little bit of advice is change them all as its so cheap to buy the pipe. I pushed the boat out and got 2 metres and changed the other longer ones too. My diesel smell went away very quickly and so did my headache when driving :D :D :D :D

Thanks everyone.

Replaced the leak off pipe that runs from the frontmost injector to the injector pump. Starting problem is now fixed.

Now to fix the leaking fuel tank. Will be replacing the fuel tank gasket at the weekend.

Cheers
