Hi,
Front door strap broke a few years ago and I now want to fix it.
Is it still possible to use the Vx reinforcement plate even if the door bit has ripped off completely. I think the strap mechanism is also mangled.
The two photos show what is left of the door and the mechanism.
Do you think there is enough meat left for the Vx plate to work and what bits do I need for the mechanism or do I need new one.

If its ripped from door, the reinforcement plates usually work

you'll probably be OK with a reinforcing plate on either side of the skin, mine's not much better have been OK with  a couple of plates.

As the original bolt holes have been ripped out, what keeps the two plates from moving around?

Not much .....   but there's not much room on the outside of the skin for  them to move in.

Looks like it, half of mine was in the bottom of the door. The new check strap was around £20, but of course there are scrap yards.

Mark, the sharp bits of black metal in picture 1 used to be part of the door in picture 2. It doesn't take long before the mechanism inside the door is ripped out.

Mines done it for 2 years. One clack followed by another as the door is opened further.

Its a little white plastic washer. You undo the vertical bolt holding the check strap to the pillar , then remove the old washer and drop a new one in. Mine seem to go about every 6 months , and I didnt think it was fair to keep popping round to TheBoy's house to get him to change them for me so I've got some on order from Vauxhall (not a dealer stock item).

They are something like 40p each.

dont suppose you've got the part number to hand...?!  

I should be collecting them next week, I can post the part number then..... but the parts bloke at my local dealer knew exactly what I meant when I described it as 'the white washer in the check strap that stops the click clack noise'
