Beastie.
« on: 05 May 2009, 20:50:08 »

Firstly this is no downer on Markey Marks spannering at all, he's never done a bad job for me yet & i'll continue to let him drive & work on my cars. He's become a personal friend as have his lovely wife, his nearly grown up kids, his dad even the dog comes & says hello!! Just thought i'd make this clear.
The point being, the beastie has now had two sets of sliders fitted & still tapping from cold. The last one involved another set taken from a quiet engine soaked for 48 hrs in clean oil, recon heads from MDTM, full cambelt kit & water pump (new) all gaskets & the oil is crystal clear as is the oil pick up. Pulls like a rather train with no smoke, holds engine temp & purrs when warm, no clatter whatsoever. So why does one slider tap when cold? I've put some Wynns slider treatment in & will see what happens over the next few days.

Any ideas please. I adore the car & once warm she'll go anywhere at any speed even when towing but getting fed up of throwing hundreds at it & getting nowhere, everything's new, i just don't get it?

Hi ther guy, i have a similar problem to you with one lifter noisier than all the rest, it seemed to get worse when i had the 3.0 cams put in but it does go a bit less noticable when hot and on a good long run. Hope you enjoyed your self at the york meet and i will try to get to the next meet to sample the famous curry again.

Alright Gary, good to hear from you mate, you @ Yvonne are always welcome for a ruby.
As for the offending lifter she's had two sets now mate so it does'nt add up. When she's warm she's quiet as a peach! ::)

Just a thought mate but if the oil pressure was on the low side I wonder if that could be a cause.
Thinking maybe the pump is getting slightly tired.

Hi James. What's a t vent?. Manifold & head gaskets are new, as are cambelt & water pump & everything really & cams are good.

God forbid it's the oil pump as i've heard folk swap engines before changing them. Given the time & money just thrown @ this engine i won't want to change it so more work & expense & Markey Marks knucles & cursing will be involved i guess!

The overdraft looms ever closer. :(

Manifold gaskets are new as all the others. Had this fault beforehand. After 2 sets of lifters & everything else. Cams are good, it must be the oil pump but why just one lifter?, she's on her 3rd set now, just does'nt add up.
If i start her from cold & hold the revs @2000 for 3 or 4 mins she's quiet once wamed up.

I'm no expert but many of you are, c'mon, rack your brains please! :'(

I'm no expert on this by any means but oil pump could make some sense...could just be the lifter furthest away is getting slightly less oil to it?? As the engine warms so the oil becomes more fluid so may well provide better coverage at this point...

Or may just be that the oil covering that lifter drains off as engine gets cold and takes a few moments to get covered in oil again??

Maybe some magnetic oil stuff might do the trick?

I'm dreading it Chris but it must be the oil pump, logically nothing else adds up, tapping sounds like it's coming from the nearside bank but hard to be sure. I'll have to talk to MM again but if it needs a pump it'll get one (NEW) I've spent more on this car than i paid for it & alot of time & effort has gone into the engine which is a peach so i won't consider an engine swap after all the work that's been done.
I love the car driving fast or slow, i've come most of the way so if she needs an oil pump i'll have to wear it somehow. I'm not giving up now!!! 8-) ::)

i thought if it was the oil pump wouldnt the bottom end start complaining first as that gets more punishment than a lifter :-/

Logically Yes but one of the fitters @ work said if the pump's in it's early stages of retirement it could be struggling to get the oil to the furthest lifter when colds hence quiet when the oil's thinner which makes sense. With help/parts from 2 of the "Marks" the engine is sweet as. It pulls like stink (ask Ian_D)!!, no smoke EVER, holds good temp. & when warm is one of the quietest you'll find. ::)
