As mentioned on my previous post my misfire has virtually been eliminated by having the breather pipes cleaned. However the noisy/throaty sounding exhaust has remained, I originally thought the misfire and exhaust probs were part of the same thing but have found out they're not. My garage just rang to say the exhaust valve is the issue and to fix would cost £600!!!! Is it really that harder job to do or is the part just very expensive?

what makes them think its the exhaust valve
and if it is it will be expensive as the head will have to be removed to replace the item

Too be honest I don't know how they've arrived at that being the problem. Is it more likey to be something else?

if the missfire is still there then i would check the dispack first as if there was oil in the plug hols before the breathers were cleaned then this point to the dis pack as the leads will short and fubar the pack

as for the exhaust being loud it is prob at the end of its life and the baffles have collapsed inside

Exhaust Valve??? The little EGR related valve behind the drivers side head that one of the centre breather pipes runs into and then runs to the carbon cannister in the drivers side wing?? Is the EML on? Mine came up with code 61 when it failed...

I all but eliminated the misfire on mine by replacing this but wasnt happy with it not being 100%...cleaning up the spark plugs did the trick, and look at the condition of the rubber on the leads while your at it...if its not this then as said most likely dispack

My brother deals with the garage as he gets discounted prices because he puts a fair bit of work there way. He only got the basic info from them and I tend to get him to relay anything I find out from this forum to ask the appropriate questions. Like I said I don't how they come to the conclusion it needs the valve but I generally trust there judgement as they've not let me down in the past. That said I got the feeling from the feedback from my bro that other than anything very minor the garage felt it wasn't worth bothering doing too much as most repairs exceed its value. I feel gutted as I thought I'd got a bargain when I bought it

Well if its the part I'm referring to then I replaced it, the alternator and the secondary air injection pump/horn in about 2 and a half hours and I'm not a mechanic...and the alternator was probably about an hour and a half of that...part wise...I have a second hand one here that wont cost you much...certainly no need to remove the head to replace it!!!

Cant see this being more than £50 including parts and labour to do

Is there anyway this valve could be the issue without the eml coming on?  I might take it to vauxhall to get a definitive answer.....

if it was a valve issue the would be a lack of compression causing  missfire, and a chuffing type of noise, it is possible the valve has got stuck and over heated causing it to crack

If I work on the worse case scenario that its the valve then does £600 seem a lot to sort it out?

I think there is a lot of confusion between the actually cylinder head valves, and the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, here

A valve in the head may well be £600 inc labour at a garage - the EGR valve is peanuts for a known good, and minutes to fit....

Unless they have compression test results, I can't believe they conclude it's a valve in the head...

The fundamental question has to be, is it still miss firing.

Secondly, if not, what is the remaining symptoms....exhaust noise?

I'm picking the car up later and will check exactly what the garage did. They haven't charged me anything so im guessing whatever they have done isn't very labour intensive. I'll report  back later with more info hopefully.
