Children mainly - but the PS3 is a good BR player and I do like Gran Turismo! :y
now whats the point of a so-so br player, when you have a knackered old crt?

a) Not THAT knackered, only 8 years old
b) Saves buying the DVDs, at least 3 I am not buying on DVD unless under £5
c) I want an LCD in the next 3 months or so

The TV still has excellent focus, reasonable geometry, but the brightness is not as bright as it was in one corner, on a bright solid colour background (one colour not all three) it is obvious. I am not cranking it up as that shows the tubes age, that is the only problem, it is wearing out gracefully and a new tube is not worth the money.

It was fine in the summer (when I checked the DVE setup) and has only just started in the last couple of weeks being AT ALL noticable, however it is on about 7 hours a day.

So it will need to be replaced before Easter but it has lasted well.

I seem to recall it was you Martin that pointed me in the direction of an av forum.....carnt remember the exact site now  :-[

But i did manage to find some info on tweaks for my Sony.....I dunno if you have tried them.....I made some changes in the engineers menus and it certainly 'sharpened' mine up a bit  :y

I managed to tweak mine up significantly (I took a C&G in colour TV repair), but was still crap. All 4 of them.  But a consumer should not have to do this.

Think your thinking of avforums btw

But mine is about 10yo's now.... :-/ Bought it when Sony were selling 32" 100Hz for £1500.....I remember being pee'd off at the time coz a month later Sony bought out the 36" 100Hz.....tho that had a price tag of £2000.........the days when i was IT contractor!  ::)

Any tweaks that helps it.....i dont mind doing.......tho i did write down original settings before i changed anything.....just in case it made it worse!

My brother has one of them. Actually, he's had a few, as they are equally crap.  He's a Sony man through and through though, like Martin Imber, so will probably get another Sony.

In the same way he is a BMW man, and will buy another, even after his dealer put his brand new X5 through a carwash with the sunroof open on its first service! And still had the nerve to ask him to pay the bill!

But your CRT can't do HI Def (actually, doubt it can do std def very well tbh).  So BR pointless until you get a 1080p panel.  Sony will cut prices again, so wait until you need it ;)

On another note, thought about getting a BR or HD-DVD drive for my Media Center, now they are under a ton.  Or should i wait for dual format  :-/

THe Pioneer writer is supposed to be good.

Depends on who you think will win. I think it wil be a long war but the Japanese will win eventually. (Look at the support main one for HDDVD is Toshiba - BR Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer)

Actually SDTV is still excellent - apart from the small area in the corner which seems to have gone since I took the brightness down one number

well i was in comet and currys with her indoors looking at plasmas, which she likes the picture on the plasmas better aswell,so plasma it is then well its not that simple i want a 1080p with 100 hertz but a lot of sets have one or the other so still undecided i did like the samsung 50"at 999 but i was looking at lg which i have been told is better in two shops well could get lg 50" 830 or just over a grand for the other one i like the look of the one at 830 better than the one at a grand but its not true hd 1080p but is 100hertz so undecided but is tempting at that price. when i was talking hd and blue ray to the guy he said you would be better getting a ps3 as they are cheeper and a games console maybe i should just get the 830 one and a cheep hd dvd i think i seen them in tescos for under 30 quid would still be detter than my crt right??????? :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-
oh the guy in currys said the 40 gig had a better laser in it but i supose he was talking bull..

i still prefer the panasonic veira  to all of the lcd`s and plasmas out there at the mo and i`m certainly seeing a load of sonys coming back in for repair lately our A.S.S.  van brings in at least 2 or 3 of em a day from stores or customers houses and i`ve exchanged 3 of em this week maybe there is a problem with manufacturing em???

I wouldn't touch a Plasma....not good at high res due to the manufacturing complexities, mega complex high voltage switching and more heat plus a vac tube setup.....not nice at all.

You want true HD 1080P and if you get the P (progressive scan) then 100Hz is not important (coz it aint interlaced so it is true 50Hz which is all the 100Hz CRT's were realy when you consider the full picture display rate).

Also be VERY careful when viewing TV's in stores, they bugger around with the settings to et certain models to stand out.

When I got mine I spent a long time buggering around with them, adjusting the picture and more importantly viewing standard off air braodcasts and DVD and not HD stuff because thats what you will use it for most at the moment......then I went and bought it off the web for 35% less......

Correct, they have the same optical pickup assembly (the bit that contains the laser).....but then he will probably try to do anything for a sale including lie.

I am with Mark on the choice of what to get.

I wondered seriously about plasma, but listened to Mark (he knows rather more about how they work and manufacturing processes then I ever will  :y).

I looked at various screens, read loads of background information and finally settled on the Sony KDL-40W3000 (bought online at a considerable saving!).

The picture quality is absloutely astounding (once you have played with the settings, excellent help in AVForums for this) and I have not yet fed it a true HD source (Bioshock on the 360 through component is the closest).
Even normal TV images are excellent (ITV aside). :)

They say the current best LCD's are a match for plasma now, and I agree with this one.

This is a major investment, so take your time and pick the right model for you, but as Mark says, you really need to go with "true" HD which is 1080P.

Now I may have to bring forward my decision to buy a PS3.... I do not want the cut down 40gb version.

Yes there are 60gb PS3's about, albeit not many now.... I had to look around for a little while to find one.

KDL-46W3000? Now that will be nice...and blinkin' expensive!  :o
I hope you have a very large room!
