Power Sounder
« on: 11 May 2009, 08:16:06 »

Good morning folks - I've been reading some stuff about the above Power Sounder & its potential faults.
As an ignorant  "newbie" please could someone please help and explain to me what this is and its purpose?
Thanks, in advance

It is a self powered 'horn' used purely for the alarm as an extra sounder
for if the car has not enough power / horns disconnected.

The batteries fail, causing random noise from them, including sounding when you are driving, or often shortly after stopping the car.

You can sometimes replace the 'non replaceable' batteries
you can replace the whole lot...

or the more common fix.....disconnect it permanatley and live with the risk one day someone will nick the car, and have disabled the normal horns  ;)

They have also been known on rare occasion to go on fire......

Not really worth the extra security if you ask me..

I'm currently in talks with a specialist battery supplier at the moment for a bulk buy of Z3A-120 batteries. Once I've set it up I will be offering batteries/repairs on here and eBay. :y

Is the noise from the power sounds vastly different to the sound from the main alarm?

Mine went off a couple of times today fro no apparent reason.  Remote open from the keyfob shut it up and i'll leave it open for now as I don't fancy dashing out in the middle of the night.

On my facelift omega, the power sounder is a siren type alarm.  There is also a dedicated horn that goes off with the main alarm.

If it is just the siren that is going off, it could be you're power sounder internal batteries starting to fail.  Sometimes you hear 4 bleeps every now and again as an early warning, when the power sounder starts to fail - but from reading up on here, there seems to be quite a few symtoms.

If it is the power sounder, I would'nt leave it too long before replacing or disconnecting. :y

I have just replaced mine as it was starting to fail. It would often emit the 4 beeps after turning the engine off, and about once a week the alarm would go off when I started the car. The replacement was £56.

One very strange side effect of replacing the sounder is that my reversing sensors now work perfectly. Prior to replacing the unit the reversing sensors would work intermittently. Could be a coincidence of course.

Is yours a pre-facelift?  It's just that my previous omega, pre-facelift, only had the horn and no siren.

Or, maybe your power sounder has been disconnected in the past - so it may be the full alarm thats activating.

A common thing apparently, is the bonnet alarm contact switch at fault.  Might be worth looking at mate - other than that, not sure. :y
