Trip computer giving me wrong information
« on: 25 May 2009, 11:42:51 »

The other day I noticed the trip computer telling me "check brake lights" so I had a mate press on the brakes and it was fine. This message came and went for a few days so I just ignored it because I knew they were fine.

So yesterday I went to Alton Towers and knowing I had the rocker gasket leak I checked the oil level before I left home and pretty much every time I stopped. 20 miles on the journey home trip computer tells me "check oil level" so I immediately pulled over and checked the level and it was fine. The rest of the 125 miles was scary!

So can anyone tell me why its doing this? The avg/speed, outside temp, comsumption etc. dont even move so I'm guessing the whole thing doesnt work?

average speed needs to be reset, if it has not been its taking your average over a long time so will hardly change.

Brake lights can also mean the light above the number plate ;)

Oil lack comes on and just under half way on the drip stick.

Re-set/Zero the various displays and take it from there.
I had the "check brake lights" showing and yet the bulbs were fine...then two days later one failed.  :-?

Just under half way on the dip stick, put the stick in and out, look at it, just under the half way point on the measurements, thats when the level comes on.

Dash light won't thats oil pressure related, SERIOUS problems will result if thats on!

I have the same thing on my car. It scared the hell out of me when it poped first time up to check the oil level. This usually happens on long uphills when the oil is at middle or bellow the midle on the dipstick.
Check brakelights should be always on when you start the car, and it should go away as soon as you press the brake pedal, at least that's the way it is on mine

No it doesn't! It's a brake light check ...... not a brake & number plate lamp check!  ;)  ;)

OK, an awful lot of 'dangle berries' stated in this thread  :-X

'Check Brake Lights', only appears on post 1998 displays, should only appear after ign switched on, and before brakes depressed for the first time. This is a different warning to 'Brake Light' which is a failed bulb.

'Check Oil Level' or 'Oil Lack' you may see on a hot day when the oil level is halfway between min and max, or lower. Try to keep it nearer max.

Numberplate bulbs are not covered by check system

The Estate is early 1998 and the saloon is mid 1998 - both have the 'Check Brake Lights' type displays.

Came in with the mini facelift's updated display, so if the last letter of VIN is W, then it has newer display.

Older displays just light the "CHECK" word until you have pressed the brakes.

So both mini facelifts, and therefore both have the newer style MID (single grey connector)

My mistake. The brake light message I get is "brake light" which comes on randomly. I do get the "check brake light" after ingnition which goes away (as mentioned)
