V6 Nightmare continues
« on: 25 May 2009, 16:51:02 »

Oh well Im beginning to think its just not meant to be.

Ive spent all day finnishing putting her back together and doing the timing. Set it al up and turned perfectly by hand (this was on the 8th attempt to get it in line).

Started her up and she fired first time, little tappity to start but soon settled into her stride and sounded great. Left running for five minutes and was watching everything for leaks (no timing belt cover fitted at the minute as waiting for it to arrive :y).

While watching I noticed that the far right cam appeared to be not running true. There appeared to be a little bit of movement then a horrible noise and ground to a halt.

I have had a look round, cams 1,2 & 3 all in line cam 4 out of line and almost touching cam 3. Looks like she may be goosed  :'(

Am really fed up with her now as been throwing money at her left right and centre. I just get one thing sorted and another jumps up and slaps me in the face  :'(

Been there, done that. I love the smoother ride of the V6 and the raw power.

Just not certain if its time to look for another engine or if it can be repaired. Im guessing the cams had it due to the enueven rotation of the cam wheel.

Is it possible to fit another cam into the head or will it have to be both changed at the same time??

If the shells and cam itself are true - it may just be the seating of the pulley that's a problem?

I didnt think you could seat the pulley incorrectly??

When putting it in position it sits onto the peg and then you insert the bolt and hey presto position found.

Thinking about it this would also be the reason why I was struggling getting the cam alignment tool into the right hand bank to check the alignment.

Looks like this one is knackered. It was probably caused the last time it was put together when the timing slipped and the rh bank seized against the piston. It probably put too much stress on the cam and bent it slightly but it aint visable by eye.

How did you fit the cam pulleys? did you use new bolts and angle tighten them correctly?   If not the pulley may simply have come loose. failing that, is this the cam that had the seized bearing cap? if that has gone tits up because of oil starvation you will need a new head.

I used the original bolts as was not aware that they required changing. Yes they were torqued to required level.

It was cam three that had the seized bearing cap and that all appears ok. I also ensured that it had very little sealant on the bearing caps this time to make sure it didnt happen again.

Will start to strip her down again tomorrow if it aint raining. Hopefully it wont have damaged the head  :-/
