car shaking at higher speed?
« on: 01 June 2009, 08:10:24 »

Yesterday drove home on highway, everything was normall till I accelerated over 140 km/h (est 90 m/h) and the car started to shake. Decelerated a little and everything turned to normal. During normal driving there isnt a single problem, only on hiigh speeds. It isn't the engine, but something with the suspension. My thought is the wheel bearing, but don't have any experience with this. Anyone knows for certain what could be the problem?

if you feel the shaking more on the chair than the steering you may have problem with rear tires-wheels..

I had something similar not long ago .... vibration at 75 mph + .... was cured by getting the rear wheels balanced  :y

Low speed vibration is usually front, high speed vibration is rear. You may have thrown a balance weight from one of the wheels or have some uneven wear.

My route to work used to have a lot of potholes and I ended up having rebalancing all round once every 2 months. I also managed to bend 3 alloy wheels in a year, this also shows up as high speed vibration (when you bend a rear wheel).

Get the wheels balanced again, have them check to make sure the alloys are not egg shaped or bent at the same time (its easy to see if the wheel is out of shape while its spinning on the balancer)

IŽ guess its wheel checking again, atthought the morons first balanced the wheels then exchanged them (front anf back position) but when they were removing them they used maul to take them off. Could have this upset the geometry of the suspension?

Sounds like a balancing issue. I was also under the impression that some wheel balancing devices have a wider tolerance and effectively only balance the wheels up to a certain speed - or commit to balancing wheels to a certain speed. Might want to check this (or anyone else know more about this....?).

bingo..

when you have new tyres installed their setup position changes as they dont stick very good to the wheel walls (and if the the tireman uses to much soap) ..

The day I buy my new tires it was ok until I forced them on a curve too much.. Now I also need a visit to the tire shop..

Henri what excatly do you mean by "tracking"?
Please explain it a little.
I suppose it is suspension geometry but not sure
